LGBT Teen Suicides

1. Haas, Ann P., et al. "Suicide and Suicide Risk in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and

Transgender Populations: Review and Recommendations." Journal of Homosexuality

58.1 (2010): 10-51.

The article summarizes the strong indications which have persisted in the overall elevation of the

suicide risks of adolescents, primarily the lives of individuals that belong to the Lesbian, Gay,

Bisexual and Transgender community. The fundamental focus was placed on how the alarming

rates of suicides still has not been considered enough for attention to be diverted to the health

sector concerning youth. Three years’ worth of effort exerted by an expert panel of psychologists

as well as analysts had been summarized in the research article. There was further focus on

developing a better and thorough understanding of remedial measures which already existed to

derive from them successful factors to incorporate in newer policies for effecting functioning.

This article focused on researching and creating a pool of information regarding existing

prevention procedures along with intervention policy and subsequent changes. The

recommendation provided, to fill in the gaps which exist between policies and procedures and

the newly obtained knowledge regarding the matter, have proven to be quite useful. The research

methods adopted provided a thorough understanding and a large bank of raw information which

provides perfect ground for one to carry out analysis in the trends of suicide in LGBT +

community.

This article provides the fundamental grounds for the claim that suicide rates are a lot higher

in LGBT + community due to multiple reasons that effect both physical and psychological health

of the majority of the youth and provide such circumstances which encourages suicide. Now, the

primary focus has been given to the preventive measures, yet not enough. It is of the utmost

importance that the officials spend time studying trends and important causes and introduce

better preventive measures.

2. Hatzenbuehler, Mark L. "The Social Environment and Suicide Attempts in Lesbian, Gay,

and Bisexual Youth." Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics 127.5 (2011): 896-

903.

The primary focus in this article was on the social factors which have furthered and elevated

the rate as well as the risk of suicides in LGBT+ community. The focal group of the research

presented in this article included students of the eleventh grade. A sample index was structure to

better extract data based on the sample size of same sex couples, registered democrats, gay-

straight equilibrium, and school policies. The results of the article proved a significantly higher

rate of suicide in the communities of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgenders. A supportive

environment contributed heavily towards the prevention and much of the resulting factors of

negative social impacts included depressive symptoms, drinking habits and drug abuse among

others.

The findings of the article had been supported by the National Health Department of America

and has credible footing with its reported information. The article itself was divided into two

porting which included: causes and remedies, which lead to a better understanding of all the

information provided.

This research article is a strong support for the Final Research paper as it covers both the causes

of elevated suicide rates as well as the factors which may contribute towards the stoppage of this

rising trend. This analysis helps elaborate upon the stance of how suicide rates are a lot higher in

LGBT+ community due to the hostile behaviour they encounter and various other financial and

social discrimination which leads to ostracization and inevitable attempt of suicide. The research

also founded connections between a supportive and friendly environment with that of the

lowered rate of suicide.
