My Journey in Understanding the Self

The first time that I saw on my registration form the subject of Understanding the Self was that
I am going to enjoy it because I have this characteristics of exploring different kinds of
characteristics of other people and also I have this characteristic of being observant. However,
when you read the phrase “Understanding the Self”, the first thing that will come up to your mind
is all about exploring ourselves, what characteristics we had based on our personalities and how
we act based on our surroundings.

When the first meeting came up, Sir Egaie was the one who entered in our classroom and I
remembered that he said he was the substitute professor for that day because we do not have
any available professor yet in our subject. To be honest, I got intimidated by the looks of Sir Egaie
and at the same time he looks so jolly because the time that we introduced ourselves to each
other, Sir Egaie keeps on entertaining us just to loosen up the atmosphere of awkwardness. Later
on, Sir Egaie announced in front of our class that he was going to be our professor for that subject.
At first, Sir Egaie was against to handle us because of 5:30-7:00pm schedule every Monday and
Thursday. I understand his side because of our schedule. Instead of going home to have a rest,
he chose to teach our class and I appreciated his sacrifices just to teach us. As the time passed
by, Sir Egaie keeps on giving us an interesting topic to discussed and he managed to avoid the
boredom of the subject to other students.

I remembered the first lesson we had, “Who am I? “, my favorite topic in this subject, I have
this quotation that until now I still hold on, “I know who I am, but I don’t really know who I am.
“. I knew who I was based on my personal identities but deep inside my self, I still figuring out
who I really am and what is my purpose in this world. Anyways, the topic “Who am I? “ introduced
different philosophers with different perceptions about the self. Although this was introduced to
us during our Senior High School days but the differences is that it was well explained now when
I was already a college student. The second topic that was remarkable for me was having a self
awareness and self esteem. Having this two in ourselves makes us who we are right now. I
remembered my childhood days, I lacked with these two. But later on, while growing up, step by
step process, I managed to gained even if it is little. Anyways, these topic was interesting
especially to those people that until now, they have a hard time dealing with these. When the
final part of the first semester was started, I learned how Digital technologies especially social
media and internet manifest into ourselves nowadays, how emotions take control ourselves
specifically when we feel an extreme emotions, how material objects affect our lives, and how
we understand our own self concept and how we enhance our self image.

This lessons was very helpful for me to generate my self to be a better person someday. And I
appreciated from the bottom of my heart the effort of Sir Egaie to teach us this subject and also
he was able to turn this ordinary subject into a wonderful one because of how he teaches this
subject to us. He teaches it with entertainment therefore, this subject never become a boring
subject for me. Although I received failing grades on quizzes, exams and even in my grades but
just like what Sir Egaie said, “Grades is just a numbers. The important thing is you should hold on
into the learnings you had learned.” Additionally, I also learned to Sir Egaie was not aiming for
and be contented on by just passing whatever the subject is. Instead, you should aim for the best.
In addition, I do not know the exact words but this is what I learned, “If you can’t go with the
storm of winds then change course and keep going. Just like in striving for your goals, there are
no easy courses to passed by before you reach your goals. All you need to do is to find ways to
change the path you are going for without giving it up then keep going until you reach the finished
line, the dream you would like to have.” Every time that I remembered this quotations that Sir
Egaie said to us, I kept being motivated especially when I think I can’t do this anymore because
of stressful days in school and in our house.

To our professor, Sir Egai, thank you so much for the lessons you implanted to us whether it is
related to our subject or life lessons. Also, thank you so much for the sacrifices you made just to
teach us even if it is night schedule, for entertaining us while discussing and inspiring and
motivating us to strive more. Once again, thank you very much Sir Egaie and keep giving other
students a lessons that they will never forget.
