Historical Background
The area of Gorizia, on the border between Italy and Yugoslavia, was at the end of the war, the theater of several battles
between Yugoslav Resistance and Axis troops (Germans and RSI troops). After an Axis offensive called "Adler Aktion", 9 x1
the village of Tarnova was fortified in order to protect the main city of Gorizia situated on Isonzo River. On early January
1945, the IX corps of Yugoslav partisans surrounded the Italian battalion "Fulmine" of the Decima Mas Division inside
Tarnova. The partisans attack began on the 19th of January and the day after others units of the Decima Mas, reinforced
by a platoon of German tanks, counter-attacked to relieve the surrounded garrison. The main battles occurred on the
heights of San Daniele and San Gabriele, and around Tarnova. On the 21st of January, the Yugoslav partisans withdrew
in the forest and the Italian garrison was relieved.
