1.2 References

The publications listed below form part of this specification. Each publication forming part of this
specification shall be the latest revision and addendum in effect on the date this specification is issued
for construction unless noted otherwise. Except as modified by the requirements specified herein or the
details of the drawings, Work included in this specification shall conform to the applicable provisions
of these publications.

The limits of piping governed by codes other than ASME B31.1 or ASME B31.3 shall be indicated on
the P&ID’s, and piping shall be fabricated in accordance with those codes.

A. ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)

 B31.1 Power Piping

 B31.3 Process Piping
 B16.5 Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings
 B16.34 Valves – Flanged, Threaded and Welding End
 B16.47 Large Diameter Steel Flanges
 B16.48 Line Blanks

B. PFI (Pipe Fabrication Institute)

 ES Standard ES-3

C. Government Requirements

Where fabrication criteria in this specification are affected by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
legislation, regulation, standard and codes, this specification shall be modified as necessary to
ensure compliance.

1.3 System Description

A. General

1. Seller furnished auxiliary piping shall be designed to accomplish its intended purpose,
but shall require minimal disassembly for equipment removal and maintenance.

2. Flanged connections shall be provided throughout the piping system, located close to
machinery or equipment and accessible to permit removal or maintenance of such
machinery and equipment.

3. The use of threaded connections should be minimized. Flanges are generally preferred
over threaded connections.

PACKAGED EQUIPMENT PIPING

4. Blind flanges shall be used at dead ends.

5. Features such as piping control assemblies shall be fully and permanently supported from
the equipment base plate.

6. On large Console type units where access is required to valves, controls, or equipment for
operation or maintenance, walkways with checker plate flooring or grating shall be
provided. Such walkways shall not be obstructed by supports, piping, valve hand wheel,
or instruments.

7. The use of tubing is permitted only where indicated by Specification MQ-SP-P-5002.

B. Supports

1. Piping shall be permanently supported. Piping shall be supported adequately to eliminate

deflection and swaying during operation. In addition, the maximum cantilevered length
of piping shall be limited to 300 mm.

2. In order to minimize loads and stresses on small connections in lines and equipment, all
valve pressure gages and gage glasses should be kept to a minimum distance from the
connection to the line, machine, or vessel.

3. Seller shall be responsible to check for flexibility of the supplied piping.

C. Bending

1. Bending of piping is not permitted without prior approval of Marafiq Piping Engineering.

D. Flange/Threaded Joints

1. Slip-on flanges shall be welded both on the front and the back. Care shall be taken to
ensure that weld splatter does not adhere to the sealing face of the flange.

2. All threads shall be completely free from cuttings, dirt, or other foreign ingredients, and
shall be fully lubricated with the appropriate thread lubricant according to Marafiq
Specification MQ-SP-P-5002, except for threaded connections which required seal
welding.

E. Appurtenance Tubing

1. Where permitted, tubing and fittings shall be compatible with the fluid being conveyed.
No tubing shall be manufactured from a metal that is less resistant to corrosion than the
base piping material.

2. The maximum run length of tubing shall be limited to 1 m (3 feet), with no more than 2
changes in direction. This maximum length shall be accomplished by designing the
piping manifolds accordingly, and using pipe where tubing runs would violate this
restriction.

3. Tubing fittings other than tubing connectors shall not be used other than in instrument
panels. Tubing is permitted between the tubing connectors at the manifold or line and the
tubing connector at the machine; no fittings of any kind are allowed.

4. Tubing used in instrument panels shall be designed so that all valves, instruments, and
other components are supported directly from the instrument panel. Support shall be
sufficient so that the valves can be operated without stressing the tubing, and all the
tubing can be disconnected without removal of valves, instruments, or other components.
Valves, instruments, and other components shall not be supported from tubing.

5. Welding of tubing is not permitted without prior written approval by Marafiq Piping
Material Engineering.

1.4 Submittals

A. Dimensional Drawings

Sellers supplying equipment with auxiliary piping shall prepare and submit for Marafiq
approval fully dimensioned drawings showing piping layout and supporting methods. This is in
addition to any other required submittals.

B. Shop Welding Procedures

Shop welding procedures used on this work shall be submitted to Marafiq for review and
comment.

C. Shop Nondestructive Examination Procedures

NDE (nondestructive examination) procedures used by Seller's shop on this work shall be
submitted to Marafiq for review and comment.

D. Piping traceability and certification

As required per the purchase order.
