Learner declaration
I certify that the work submitted for this assignment is my own. I have clearly referenced all resources used in my
work. I understand that false declaration is a form of malpractice.
Scenario:
Numerix Technologies Limited is a pioneer in the field of electromechanical component design for the
computer and aviation industry headquartered in Bangalore, India. Mr. Rafiu Jameel – principal design
engineer for cooling systems for microelectronics is engaged in the design of DC brushless axial blow fans
and heat sinks for use in advanced light helicopter. Kindly offer your technical expertise by solving a few
design problems in dynamic thermal systems.
P8: Calculate dimensional change when a solid material undergoes a change in temperature and the heat
transfer that accompanies a change of temperature and phase.
Task 1: A steel rod (1 to 10)m long, of diameter 10 mm is heated from 30°C to 500°C, assuming the linear
expansivity α = 13*10-6/K.
Determine the change in length and strain induced,
P9: Solve two or more problems that require application of thermodynamic process equations for a perfect
gas to determine unknown parameters of the problems.
Task 2: A container containing gas at absolute pressure of (1 to 5) bar is compressed until the gas inside
reaches a pressure of 1.8 bar.
Determine the reduced volume if the original volume = (100 to 500) mm3.
Task 3: A container containing gas at a temperature of 20°C To 40°C is heated until the gas reaches a
temperature of 20°C to 90°C.
Determine the increased volume if the original volume = (100 to 500) mm3..
M3: Determine the thermal efficiency of a heat transfer process from given values of flow rate, temperature
change and input power.
Task 5: A heat exchanger is rated at (10 MW To 20 MW) and is supplied with water at 20°C . The
exchanger heats the water to 100°C at which point it is turned into dry steam. The heat exchanger supplies
dry steam at 2 kg/s. If the specific heat capacity of water is 4.19 KJ/kg and the specific latent heat of
vaporisation is 2.25 MJ/kg, Determine
The heat supplied/Kg
The thermal efficiency.
M4: Determine the forces induced in a rigidly held component that undergoes a change in temperature.
Task 6: (2.5 Kg To 3.5 Kg) of ice at -3° C is heated to turn it into water, then continually heated until it
has all turned to dry steam. Assume that:
Specific heat capacity of water = 4.19 KJ/Kg
Specific latent heat of fusion (Lf) = 335 KJ/Kg
Specific latent heat of vaporisation (Lv) = 335 KJ/Kg
Determine the total heat supplied.
