BRIGHT

IDEA
When is your bright idea a
successful business opportunity?
Theory
It happens when your idea is anchored on a PRODUCT or
SERVICE that adds value to the customer (market) where
demand (sales) is big and sustainable (so that you may earn
profit).
• Bright ideas run the world. Can you imagine a world now
without light bulbs, airplanes, cars, … and more recently cell
phones, computers and the internet?
• If bright ideas are responsible for progress, how then can we
generate more of them and be SUCCESSFUL?
• The secret to identifying whether an idea can indeed be
turned into a good business opportunity is triggered by what
is called “DRIVERS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY”.
Drivers of Business Opportunity
can either be one or a
combination of:
1. Perspiration (Competence)
• This driver of opportunity is internal since it come from your
talents, skills, or hobbies.
2. Inspiration (Chance)
• Everyday, you observe something, someone, somewhere and
the ‘idea bulb’ (AHA) crops up to inspire you to do or
develop or innovate an ’IT’. The ‘AHA MOMENT’ can either
be a modified product, a combination, a revival from failure
or the same product but for different use.
2. Inspiration (Chance)
• Some people have a keen eye for grabbing a chance (a
serendipitous event or what we call an ‘AHA Moment’) that
seems invisible to some
• Example of ‘serendipity’ products are:
1. Coca-cola was a happy ‘accident’ – the bartender
accidentally ’carbonated’ a drink
2. Ivory soap was a rejected soap
3. Post-it was a ‘failed’ glue
3. Irritation (Crisis)

How true is this statement: There’s an

opportunity in every crisis!

Activity: Think of a Crisis and mention

the various opportunities to start a
business.
Question: Do we have to wait for a crisis in
order to have an opportunity?
What qualities do we need to
develop to help us generate more
bright ideas? How do we become
more innovative?
Qualities of Innovators
• CHILDLIKE – They possess a childlike curiosity and a
questioning attitude – always exploring how things work and
discovering the principles behind them.
• DARING – They dare to go beyond the limits and create new
paradigms. They invest blood, sweat ad tears.
• NON-CONFORMING – they challenge conventional wisdom,
like the Wright brothers who pioneered heavier-an-air
• PERFECTIONIST – They pursue excellence, innovate
constantly, and strive to perfect results every time.
To Believe is to see!
Let us look at some of the local examples of bright ideas
turned to business or to some extent fads of our Philippine
economy:
1. Balikbayan box bags – since the normal luggage of the
Pinoy cannot fit all the pasalubong for the barangay.
2. Aircon FX rides – sweat, traffic, smog, and delays from
normal jeepneys and buses plus expensive tavi fare.
• Crispy PATA – the love of Pinoys for pork that’s crispy.
• Lechon manok – an alternative to the expensive lechon
baboy or KFC.
• hot pandesal – Pinoys cannot do without coffee and
pandesal. However, most bakeries did not differentiate nor
innovate.
• Water-refilling station – although we have a good filtration
system, the asbestos and iron pipes are dilapidated.
• Bottled iced tea – an alternative to high-calorie soda drinks
• Events organizer – suits the busy host or celebrant who
wants a hassle-free party
• Party clowns – when daddy and mommy is busy but wants
baby and guests enetertained
