In this regard, the researchers assert that problem in internet utilization plays a critical
effect in gender. Supporting this, few studies have revealed gender contrasts in
internet use (Akhter, 2013). This hypothesis additionally depends on the way that the

Besides, it depends on a cultural point set forward by Tsai et al. (2009), that female
students are regularly regulated more oftentimes by their families than males
particularly in eastern cultures, which may bring about male's abnormal utilization of
the Internet.

This displacement may happen on the grounds that the internet, which engages
young people with animating pictures just as visual and sound-related impacts are
more alluring and quickly satisfying than are school-related exercises. Therefore,
utilizing the Internet will bring about the uprooting of academic activities, as TV once
did, and will, in the long run, lessening the juvenile's academic achievement (Aderson,
Huston, Schmitt, Linebarger, Wright, and Larson, 2001; Koshal, Koshal, and Gupta,

Media Equations Theory. This theory recommends that the media is like reality and
the electronic media specifically, are given human instinct. This is based on the
equation, Reeves and Nass (1996) expressed that we react to the correspondences
media as if they alive. The investigation shows that introduction to online networking
affects students and the impact is negative. Informal communication media that are
as often as possible utilized and favored by students are Facebook, and it gives an
antagonistic impact on students' exhibition. This is since students invest more energy

students on Internet addiction and academic success are presented and discussed.
In the last chapter of the study, the sub-topics was identified and now the focus in the
sequence of the discussion. The study wanted answers in particular to the following
problems. The level of Internet addiction of grade 9 students in San Vicente National

between two variables; and to determine which domain of Internet addiction that

These may be an influence to the academic success of the Grade 9 students. The
data on every indicator for internet addiction were discussed and it could be
highlighted that the standard deviation in most tables is less than 1.0 which is the
typical deviation for a 5-point likert scale according to Wittink and Bayer (1994) which
means that the ratings obtained in this study are very close to the mean, indicating
consistency of responses.
Salience. Found in table 1 are the data for this internet addiction. As presented in the
table, the overall mean is 3.09 or moderate. It means that the respondents have
that they experienced this extent use of internet regularly since they acknowledged
for their effort exerted. Also, it indicates that the respondent likely feels preoccupied
with the Internet, hides the behavior from others, and may display a loss of interest in
other activities and/or relationships only to prefer more solitary time online.
The data show that there are 5 statements under salience. The first statement

These show that the respondent engages in excessive online behavior and

indicator is manifested sometimes in the grade 9 students. All three statements are

simply implies that all statements are sometimes true and manifested in the grade 9
students. This means that the school performances of the grade 9 students and their
productivity are likely compromised due to the amount of time they spent online and
the respondents may become defensive or secretive about the time spent online.

respondents prefer when it was with friends but sometimes we need to manage our
time with our partner. The second and last statement I often form new relationships

mean from the range 2.60 to 3.39 that respects to the descriptive equivalent of

along with a descriptive equivalent of moderate. Thus, this means that this
determinant is sometimes manifested all the time by the respondents. Meaning, the
respondents are likely utilizing online relationships to cope with situational problems
and/or to reduce mental tension and stress. Also, it suggests that the respondent
frequently forms new relationships with fellow online users and uses the Internet to

Chapter IV
Discussion
This study sought to investigate the internet addiction among the grade 9
students of San Vicente National High School. The internet addiction involved in the
study was described in terms of salience, excessive use, neglect work, anticipation,
lack of control, and neglect social life. These factors connect respondents' severity of
self-reported compulsive use of the Internet. With an overall mean of 2.96 indicates
that the grade 9 students have a moderate severity of internet dependency. Using the
Likert Scale, the findings from (number of respondents) showed that the Internet
Addiction are sometimes manifested all the time. All the indicators in this variable got
In the study, certain different aspects, what the use is proposed for, media
expectations and media content determined the intended and unintended use of the
internet. Hence there are no general styles to how everyone uses the internet, and it
is rather unusual based on fulfilment of desires. This study also supported by the
theory of the uses and gratification theory (U&G) which recommended that
media an individual chooses and how an individual chooses and uses a particular form

of communication is heavily circumstantial and influenced by an individuals’
Another objective of the study was to define the level of students’ academic
success towards grade 9 students in San Vicente National High School. Composing
the mean of grades in English, Math, and Science this yields an overall mean value
This opposes the study of Akhter, (2013). Excessive use of Internet or Internet
addiction adversely affects one's physical health, family life, and academic
performance this was the findings that the researcher has shown. Internet addiction
affect academic performance that include decline in study habits, significant drop in
grades, missing classes, increased risk of being placed on academic probation, and
according to Gender
Also this study seeks to provide the level of internet addiction among the
respondents according to gender. It shown that the female has a result of moderate
and that means the internet addiction are sometimes manifested all the time. In the
other hand, the male has a result of moderate that means the internet addiction are
sometimes manifested all the time. In conclusion, the male has a higher mean than
57
the female that means the male student perceived internet addiction acquisition to be
sometimes manifested.
Also this study seeks to provide the level academic success among the
respondents according to gender. It showed that the female has a result of satisfactory
which means that the student performed in the class with approaching proficiently. In
addition, the male has a result of fairly satisfactory which also means that the student
performed in the class with developing mastery. In general, the female has the higher
mean than the male that means that the female students of grade 9 perceived
between internet addiction and academic success. As said, out of all the indicators of
internet addiction, the only one that has significant relation between academic success
is the Excessive Use, hence it rejects the null hypothesis garnering a p-value of 0.10
and a correlation value of .262 with a significance level of 0.05. The remaining
indicators just accepts the null hypothesis which indicates that there is no significant
relationship among them and the academic success gathering a p-value that is greater
In addition, this also supported by the study of Lubans [1999], Scherer [1997],
and Jones [2002]. In terms of academic performance, the internet had a negative and

a neutral influence and also stated that most of the students assumed they have

and euphoria in the user, and works on the principle of operant conditioning (Murali &

Success
Lastly the fifth objective of the study was to determine which domain of Internet
San Vicente National High School and out of all indicators in this study, the Excessive
Use is the indicator that shows a significantly influence on academic success with the
highest corresponding Beta value of .345 and a significant value of .020 that is lesser
than 0.05.
The increase in the Internet usage time caused a significant increase in the Internet
addiction level of the students as expected. For instance, Young (2007) stated in her
study that individuals who utilize the Internet for over 40 hours in seven days will in
general become Internet dependent. This result is also evident with the studies in the
literature (Cakir et al. 2008; Durak et al. 2011; Karaman and Kurtoglu 2009; Yilmaz et
al. 2014).
59
To sum up, the researchers convinced that internet addiction among grade 9
students does not affect their academic success base on the results shown from the
data. This simply means that internet addiction can improve the nature of education
and educational assets, expanding opportunities for learning in and beyond the
classroom. Teachers utilize online materials to get ready exercises, and students to

factor to affect their academic success. However, excessive use that is an indicator of
internet addiction has a mean of 0.010 less than 0.050 which means that it has
