PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

The term technology comes from the Greek word “techne” which means the art or skill

used in order to solve a problem, improve a pre-existing solution to a problem, achieve a goal,

handle an applied input or output relation or perform a specific function. Technology is the

making, modification, usage and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques and method of

organization.

Technology is the energy that act as the driving force to drive or to run out lives. It is

nothing but the results of the innovations and creativity of human beings. It has brought the

automation level into such a height that human effort and his time has been saved to a great

extent (Muduli, 2014)

That means, technology can refer to the collection of tools, including machinery,

modification, arrangements and producers. Due to this, the access to information has now

become easier and the distant locations are getting closer. IT and communication system

provided such facilities that the world is now feeling like a small globe visually. Because of

technology our life makes easier than before and it help our country for its modernization period,

and also we can do multi-tasking.

Addiction to technology is habitual compulsion to engage in using technology instead of

using it to address life’s problems. They use it as a coping mechanism to avoid conflict. Long

term compulsion can lead to psychological problems such as insomnia, irritability and depression

(Young, 1998)
When we say addiction, it is the continued repetition of behavior or an activity

independent or it can be neurological impairments which leads to such behaviors. The examples

of compulsion above are to use technology in favor of rare and exciting life events such as

parties or vacations might signify addiction. Attitudes changes in teens, sudden depression, loss

of self-esteem, problems in paying, inability to sleep and/or easily to feel anger and impatience.

Actually, the term addiction to technology means the high degree of likeness towards

technology. So, if someday addicted towards it, then they lose control over his own mind and

faces difficulties to get rid of the claws of that object. And based on our observation, most teens

today spend too much of their time with their faces buried in technological gadgets. They

become the largest consumer of such devices and services, which in turn makes them addicted at

some point of time.

Another aspect on which the technology addiction has an affected is the life style of an

individual. Accordingly, lifestyle is nothing but the way of life of an individual or a group of

individuals or the society as a whole. It is dependent upon both seen and unseen factors. All the

aspects of life style may not be voluntary in nature because one is associated with the society and

that surrounding plays an important role in shaping the choices of an individual’s lifestyle

(Giuffre and Di Geronimo, 1999)

As in case of addiction to technology gadgets time and choice are the concerned factors,

the lifestyle is necessarily affected by the same. It is also some day’s attitudes, values, word

views, etc. are reflected by their lifestyle. So, therefore, lifestyle means making some sense of

the self and creating some cultural symbols which will reflect the identity of a person. It is

dependent upon both seen and unseen factors because the former includes the demographic

profile of the individual and the latter includes the psychological status of an individual. The
lifestyle is always a changeable concept because the choices of human beings and also the

natural environments are changeable. Depending upon the changing mood individuals select

their activities and fix their timing to those.

The discussion above lead to the ideas about the impacts of the addiction to the

technological gadgets and services. Addiction to technology has a negative impact on mental

health and it also affects the social behavior of the individuals by the cause of change in his

lifestyle. The current study is on the interrelation of the above three concepts. It will focus on the

impact of the addiction to technological gadgets and services on mental health and lifestyle of

the Grade Seven students at Piagapo National High School.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

The study will be anchored a differents theories below and a concept that play a

significant role in the formulation the study it is important to look for theories that will grently

support your study. These researchers considered these theories that will directly explained the

major concepts involved the research.

In this study the theories will be gives is about the impacts of the technology gadgets

especially to the youth and students. Technology has always impacted society in significant ways

and to the students, and majority of its using technology gadgets. A research by kumar and

sherkhane (2018) reveals has always been worrying about the term ‘Drug Addiction of our youth

but Gadgets addiction is more critical are of concern in the present era and can be observed in

todays scenario where the young generation inclination toward the latest gadgets such as smart

,tablets, laptop and electronic gadgets is pasing a threat to the social infianstructure in the future.

A research that reveals by sherkhane (2018) is about on how the youth was addicted to

the Drug, but they are more addicted to the technology Gadgets as it concern and observed in the

presents era which it was the electronic Gadgets such as the smart phones, Phone, Tablets and

cause a harmful effects to the social Infracture in the future. In that core though this research and

as a researchful. We need to give a solution to problem given. And find the person was addicted

to this technology gadgets this can causes a dependeng on it.

Another study by kumar et. Ai (2018) the dependency of people on these technological

gadgets and services provided by these has reached at such a level that. Without these, they are

unable to think a step forward in the direction of their growth. The degree of technology devices

and services.
A research study based by kumar et. al (2018) says that people was addicted to the

technology that can reached and cause a level of without technology they can’t step and think an

life and go the direction of their growth.

Our reason is the degree of dependency is leading to addiction in the technology devices.

And that case can impact to your lifestyle are even to your health. The impact to your lifestyles is

to dependent to these technology. While on health, when you are more dependent to these it can

cause a bad side effected to your health theory by using it too much.

One study by Dr. Mahavir Mkaer and Dr. Naval (2018) reveals that technology is the

energy acts as the driving for to drive or to run our lives. It is nothing but the results of the

innovation and creativity of human beings recently.

The study by Dr. Mavir Maker and Naval (2015) says that technology id driving our lives

nowadays.it is the force of energy who lend and drive the human mostly the younger or the

youth. It theory given by Dr. Maker snd D. Naval (2015) also says that it technology was nothing

the results being innovated and creative of the human beings in recent time. Every other day,

unfamiliar technology or IT invents lucrative gadgets are attracting the attention of the present

generation. As the study of Dr. Maker and Dr. Navad (2015) mean that the youth becomes the

largest consumer of such devices and services which in turn makes them addicted to them at

some point of time.

In addition to the study given by Dr. Maker and Navad (2015) the modern technology has

experienced vast expansion in recent years, lending to its extensive use by people from all

generations.

Aside from the negative aspects, their some studies that reveals positive aspects.

According to sundaes M. (2018) . technology has been proven to be very helpful in educating
student . children can acess the educational websites and can get detailed information about

required topic.

Technology can helps us to improve our education system. Not only the society looks but

the way the classroom looks changed too. In fact, the use if technology gadgets and services by

the present generation has a positive impact for learning of youth. They can use it by surfing.

Capturing the lecture, and use it for better communication system. Although the use of

technology gadgets and services has many positive impacts, they are short lived.

In long run, it has negative impacts on the individuals it takes the young mass away from

the reality helping live in their imaginary world. The digitals behaviour of the youth makes them

sit at one place for a long time and the eye, hand and mental coordination is maintained during

that period, instead of playing out side to maintain good health. The indulgence in violent games

may create more violence on their mind. The more they use the gadgets, the more they are crazy

about it which may distract them for study. After all, addiction to the technology may develop

unhealthy lifestyle, poor time management and poor eating habits among the youth.

The discussion above led to the ideas about the theoretical framework among the addiction of the

technology and its impact to the mental and lifestyle.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This study will discuss the some of the history of technology and will deal with the positive

impacts of the technology gadgets on individuals. There are also studies which show negative the

negative impacts of this technology to individual. Some of the studies take both positive and

negative impacts of these technologies into consideration and some other show a balanced

approach regarding the use of technology gadgets and service.

According to Ian Mcneil (1990), the history of technology is neglected in comparison yet, in

a sense, it lies behind them all. What monarchs and statesmen did in the past, how they fought

their wars and which side won was largely dependent on the state of their technology and that of

their enemy. Their motivation was more often than not economic and economic history and the

history of technology can surely be considered as twin had-maidens, the one almost totally

dependent on the others. So far as social history is concerned, the lot of the common man, as of

his king and his lords, was usually directly related to the state of technology prevailing at any

particular time and place, whatever political and economic factors may also have been of

influence.

In the given study by Ian Mcneil (1990), the history was not given proper or necessary care

on attention in comparison until now, in a sense, it is all not true behind them all. But the history

of technology can surely be considered as twin hand-maidens, which the other was very totally

dependent to the other. This means that the history of technology was a twin that never be

separated on a reason of the one was dependent on the other. And the social historical is a

common man and to his king and lord which they are direct related to the state of technology to
defeat an opponent at any particular places and time, even the political and economic factor may

also have been influenced of this technology.

On this chapter will also give the historical evidence on the energy technology transition that

shape the structure of the global energy system and the qualitative dimension to energy use since

that onset of theIndustrial Revolution (Nakivenovic et al. 1998). The first energy technology

transitions look well over a century to unfoldfully: between the late 18th century until the 1920's

whom coal based steam power constituted well over two thirds of the global system. The second

energy technology transition is characterized by the displacement of the previously dominating

coal-coal-based steam technology cluster by electricity (drives light) and petroleum based

technology (Automobiles, aircrafts, petrochemicals). As noted, earlier, second is far from

completed (GEA 2011).

Both these historical energy technology transition are characterized by the various grand

patterns of technological change, each of which is discussed above that it is amend-use

applications drive-supply-side transformation and performance dominates cost in the initial

market niches and the technologies do not change individually, but a duster and spoil over.

Aside from the historical background of technology, this study will show a studies that

consider as a negative and positive impact of the technology on individuals and a both positive

and negative impacts of technology.

3.0 Positive Impacts of Technology

"Technology has become important in our daily lives" (Ramey 2012). Mobile technology

allow individuals to talk to each other around the world. In study given by (Ramey 2012)
technology is important for a reason of making our life easier and to make our country in a

modernazation. "The global smartphone audience surpassed that 1 billion mark in 2012 and will

total 1.75 billion in 2014 (Srivastana 2014). That means that in the study by (Srivasta 2014) was

that the Global smartphones will passed increasing. In 2012, it increased at 1 billion and a total of

1.7 billion in 2014 increases. Technological devices may have positive effects on individuals are

creativity skills and strategic thinking can be revealed. Technology also enables better source for

learning and encourages youth to enjoy learning. "It has provided opportunities for students all

over the world to receive an education online, while still maintaining work schedules and family"

(Walker 2014). The study by Walker (2014) shows that technology may give a big help to the

students who want to study even they are in their homes to help their parents and family. The

following studies support the positive effects of technology and technological devices. The

growth of the Internet continues every second. "Almost 42% of the world's population has access

to the internet in January 2015, representing a significant jump in reported numbers since last

year's report, when the same figure was just 35% (kemp 2015). In August 2014, the number of

all world wide social media users exceeded 2 billion" (kemp 2015). In the study by (kemp 2015)

means that the world's population users of the Internet and Social Media were increased,

exceeded and growing rapidly.

Research conducted by O'kuffe and Clarke-Pearson (2011) shows that "Engaging in various

forms of social media is a routine activity that research has shown benefits to children and

adolescents by enhancing communication, social connection and even technical skills". The

study conducted by O’keffee and Clarke-Pearson (2011) shows that the social media is a routine

that engaging and gives a benefit to the children and adolescents to enhance their

communication, and social connection and the technical skills can develop.
3.1 Negative Impacts of Technology

The following studies highlight some of the negative factors accosted with technology and

use of technological devices. "Keeping the kids busy during a long car ride is a (cinch) thanks to

digital devices that will play apps, games, music, movies and TV shows. But children often wear

earbuds and headphone and in doing so, risk irreversible eardrum damage if the volume is too

loud. Further, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirms that computers screen emit

low levels of x-ray radiation. While there is no evidence that this radiation results in health

problems, the EPA also Addition that you limit your child's time with a computer or tablet with

on their laps an in front of their faces. Also, because enjoying digital devices tends to be a

sedentary pastime, children may be susceptible to weight gain" (Walsh 2012).

On the study revealed by Walsh (2012) means that aside from the positive effect of these

technology is there's also a negative effects of technology to the individuals. The negative effects

of this technology possibility on the health, even the EPA said that we need to limit using

technology gadget because of the possible negative impact on the health.

"Teenagers spend, on average, 8.08 hours a day using various forms of media, not including

time spent doing school work or talking or texting on a phone. This includes television

commercial or self-recorded video, movies, video, video games, print, radio, recording music,

computers, cellphones and the internet (Prevent together. org, 2015). The study revealed by

(Prevent together org, 2015) says that most of time of every teenagers using tech-gadgets are

spent in using tech-gadgets and other technologies. They did not do their school work even

spending time to their home. They are too much addicted to those technology gadgets and other
technology. Gaming addicts will choose their games over responsibilities and people on their

life. They will make excuses to study home and play and may miss important events to do so.

Their social life will no longer take place outsiders of the home, and they may "meet" friends

online to interact rather than seeing friends in person.

3.2 BOTH NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY

Some studies focus on both the positive and negative consequences of use of the tech-devices

and provided a balanced approach research the use of the same.

"Technology is an essential need every body's life. Without technology, many things would

not be able to materialize" (Moradi, 2016). In the study by (Moradi 2014), these technologies

make the other things become materialized and made.

"The usage of technology for over exploitation of resources should be always avoided. If we

use it for positive things, it will have positive effect of our lives and viceversa. Nobody would

oppose the development of technologies in any sector but the developments should be in a

positive way and they should not have any negative impact in present or future generations"

(Mydailyalert. com 2013).

This study revealed by (Mydailyalert. com 2013) says that the technology should be avoided

in terms of using it to the exploitation of resources. If the technology used in positive way it can

result a good effect and vice versa or an opposite of the positive effect is also a true in our daily

lives, in the development of technologies, it should be on the positive way and should not the

negative impact to present and future generations in society.

Tagloy (2012) states that the relationship among technology, popular culture, and children's

development is complex and difficult to define. Because both our boots-on-the ground

experience and research studying this issue are still relatively limited, they continue to be little

clarity on the role that they play in children’s development. As a result, we cannot easily labeled

the influence "good" or "bad", healthy on "unhealthy."

Rising children in a technology-refused world is more than understanding the ins and outs of

the Facebook, twitter and computer games- or about the digital habits of teens. It's about the

understanding the relationship of technology, popular culture and development (Price-Mitchell

2012).

Based on the study by Price- Mitchell (2012) says that the rising children in technology-

infused world or introduce novel than their understanding to the social media and computer

games, or their habits. But popular culture and child development, which is in according to

Tayloy (2012) it is a complex and difficult it to define.

Technology is a double edged scored. From the above reviews, it is clear that the youth of

today are the principal consumers of technology. This mixed set of research findings led to think

how the youth use the technology to bring about positive changes in their lives and avoids the

negative consequences of using technology excessively based on the review of literature.

Locale

Electronic Gadgets become an integral part of society to illustrate; a survey by Microsoft

reveals that average Filipino possesses ten different types of gadgets for communication only

(Macanas). Clearly, technological innovations have a significant impact on the Filipino to cater

to this, the production of electric devices are increased. (Golez, 2015)

The study revealed by Golez (2015) says that Filipino's possesses the different types of

gadgets. And clearly, the Filipino’s are the most common demand for electronic devices, mean

high demand to the technology and the other rate of these technology is increased to the Filipino

demands.

According to Agarrado and Gutierreng, the issue of improperly treated e-waste is a matter of

"Volume and Toxicity" (17). The amount of e-waste, which already comprised a big fraction of

the Philippines landfills today, is still expected to grow over time, and when mishandled, the

dangerous chemicals which make-up e-waste threats not only to environment, but also to the

people (Agrrado and Gutierreng 7-9).

The problem now lies in the fact that there is presently no law concerning the proper

treatment of e-waste in the Philippines (Agrrado and Gutierreng 16). Unfortunately, not all

recycling methods practiced by waste management offices are guaranteed to be safe. In

particular, unsafe methods such as incinerating and physical dismatling of appliances are

example of "informal cycling" ( Arragado and Gutierreng 10-12).

One of the studies given by (Arragado and Gutierreng p. 7-9, 10-12,), All in all, the hightend

demand for electronic device causes an imbalance between the production rate of gadgets and the

swelling amount of improperly managed e-waste. To prevent this issues of pollution from

worsening, proper treatment of e-waste be ensured.

ELECTRONIC STUDENT RESPONSE SYSTEM

A study by Ateneo De Manila University (2018) electronic student Response system is an

emerging technology used to actively engage students within a learning environment, be it in a

lecture theater, tutorial room, classroom or laboratory setting it also immediate feedback

regarding their understand of the learning materials.

A study by the Ateneo De Manila University (2018), about the Electronic Response system

which is a technology environment. This technology creation has a good impact to the students

within learning environment. This technology creation can help the students in term of tutorial

room, classroom, an laboratory setting. And feedback understanding to the learning materials can

help to the students.

FOREIGN

Impact of technology on Student outcomes.

Janke(2010) observed the effects of outline forum use and students learning, engagement

and outcomes. This research evidenced that students using outline discussion forum gave rise to

greater social construction of knowledge, thus further validity the choices of outline environment

to improve learninh outcomes (Janke, 2010).

In the study of (Janke, 2010) says that impact of technology on the students outcome

through the online discussion forum gave rise and increase a greater choice and it improves the

learning and knowledge outcomes of the students.

Likewise, Doan and Bloodfield (2014) conducted a study and found that using internet helps

students write better says. The results indicated that the student’s group receiving training to

conduct research in the prewriting phase out performed the control group in two areas: the total

essay score and usage/ mechanics (Doan and Bloofield, 2014).

In the the study of Doan and Bloofield (2014), found out that using internet have better helps

to the students in terms of giving information and to indicate the student in receiving group

training by using the internet in the terms of conducting research. Which have two areas; the

essay score and usage/ mechanics? Thus the value and role of technology and the internet cannot

be over started.

ATTACTIVENESS OF TECHNOLOGY

Teens are particularly susceptible to technology for several reasons. First, teens tend to have

poor coping mechanism. In the faces of stress, they often turn to what's conforming to them.

Usually, something easy to focus including online videos or social media sites. The increased

convenience and widespread availability of technology makes it easy for a teen to whip out

mobile devices and switch her focus from the real world to the virtual world. Also, in the teen

years, self-identify is crucial. Most teens struggle with understanding who they are and how to

present themselves. One attraction of technologies such as online videogames and the internet is

the anonymity it brings allowing teens to express themselves without putting their ego at risk.

In the present era, the introduction of modern technological gadgets has captured the

attention of global population. As a vulnerable group, teens become the largest consumer of such

devices and services, which in turn makes them addicted to them at some point of time. They

become independent to it. They lose control over his own mind. They can't control their selves

hot to spend too much of their time with their faces buried in technological gadgets. When they

faces stress, they often choose what is comforting to them, usually something easy to focus on

such as online videos or social media sites. They use it to escape in reality.
IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

Now we understand the use of any technology an effect on the mental health and lifestyle

directly or indirectly that may be positive or negative.

Prof. Phil Reed (2013), Professor of Psychology in Swansea University's college of Human

and Health Sciences Claims that net addiction as the cause of the depression, social isolation and

disrupted sleep and it is in the present generations. Psychologist Dr. Kimberly Young begun to

study the topic of technology addiction as long ago as 1995 and wrote about it is a book called

"Caught in the Net" in 1998. She compares online addiction to the drugs or alcohol because

internet provides the addicted people with the same kind of high leading the dependency on it to

feel normal. A study conducted in the year 2013 by Swansea and Milan University shows that

when the addicted come offline, they set negative mood swings, increased levels of depression

and impulisitivity countries like Us, Chaina, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea have

sounded the warning that internet addiction represents a significant health threat (Booth rough,

2014).

The study conducted in 2013 by Swansea and Milan University cited by (Booth rough,

2014) means that when the addict come offline this can cause negative mood swings means

negative health impact that increases depression and impulsivity. Some of the countries that

improved of technologies like Japan, Us, Chaina, Australia, Singapore, South Korea has worried

about the negative and significant impact of technology to the health threats. Which the internet

addiction has an negative impact on the health.

Thus are the studies provided of Review and Related Literature in conducting of this research?
CHAPTER III
