In this chapter we will look at the influences that help determine our developmental
pathway through life.
What is Development? Human Development is the scientific study of the changes that occur in
people as they age, from conception until death.

Nature Vs Nurture: Heredity and environment.

Nature refers to heredity, the influence of inherited characteristics on personality, physical
growth, intellectual growth, and social interactions.

Nurture refers to the influence of the environment on all of those same things and includes
parenting styles, physical surroundings, economic factors, and anything that can have an
influence on development that does not come from within the person.

Kinship Studies: Identical Twins have the same heredity and the same environment. Identical
Twins raised apart have the same heredity but different environment. Fraternal Twins. Brothers
and Sisters. Parent and Child. Adopted Children have different heredity but the same
environment. We study Nature Vs. Nurture with Kinship Studies. Feral Children- Feral means
wild. They were never able to develop normally due to being raised in the wild by animals.

Genetics: Hereditability Index, schizophrenia- 50% (differs on which parent has schizophrenia)
If both parents have schizophrenia half of their kids would end up with Schizophrenia, and half

would not. If one parent has it the child would only have a 10% chance of getting schizophrenia.
If neither parent has Schizophrenia the child would have a 1% chance of getting it. Intelligence.

Cognitive Development: How do we think. How do we make sense of the world? Piaget.
Schema.

Psychosocial Development: Erikson- 8 Stages of psychosocial development. Each stage has a

crisis. Deal with the crisis. Birth to 1 year old: Develops trust.

Attachment: Mary Ainsworth. Strange Situation.

Adolescence:
Parenting Styles:
Authoritarian- A lot of rules, control the children’s life. Kids who don’t have a good framework
of behavior due to parent controlling them. When they go off on their own, they are lost
because they don’t know why or why not to do things.
Permissive- Allow the kids to do whatever they want; kids make the rules. Raise kids who have
lack of guidance because they were able to do whatever they wanted. Lack their inner drive.
Kids get into trouble because they follow their own guidelines.
Authoritative- some rules, explanations’ of why or why not you are supposed to do something.
Lots of love and affection. Recommended.

Marriage and Divorced:

Religion- Rate going down. Most religions tell you marriage is important, and you should get
married. Divorce is not okay.
Role of Women Changed
Acceptance of gay marriages
Financial
Expectation of Divorce.

Longevity: Dan Buettner. Live a lot longer than the rest of the world. What is common among
these places to make them live longer. These places were called “Blue Zones”. Things that
contribute, their diet (no red meat, beans, activity -not exercise based, vegetarian). Very active
with family and friends.
