The principle component of the Hook Hoist Overspeed Generator assembly has been a
DC motor manufactured by Bodine Electric and modified by LeTourneau. This shunt-
wound motor is no longer available. Its replacement is a 1/40 Hp DC motor
manufactured by the Carter Motor Co. The replacement motor is interchangeable -
mounting to the same base and driven by the same coupling (flexible shaft).
The purpose of the SIL is to alert crane owners and operators that a new voltage -
dropping resistor is required when this replacement is first made. See “CAUTION”.
This DC motor serves as a “tach” (tachometer) generator, providing the Hoist Drive
motor speed signal to the speed/voltage limiter controller. In this letter this DC motor is
referred to as the “overspeed generator”. It is mounted on the brake head that is
integral with the C-9 Hook Hoist Drive DC motor.
CAUTION
MAXIMUM HOOK LOWERING SPEED CAN BE EXCESSIVE – exceeding the
Hoist Drive motor’s capability of safely stopping a heavy load. TO
PREVENT OVERSPEED, change the resistor, supplying excitation to the
overspeed generator shunt field, to a 1-Watt, 1,600-ohm resistor.
ORDERING INFORMATION:
When ordering replacement parts, use the part numbers given in the “new” column of
the following table:
NOTES: 1. The 1,600-OHM resistor scales the Carter motor’s output (mV/RPM) to be
equivalent to that of the Bodine.
CONNECTIVE INFORMATION:
The wire codes 198AH and 198 connect the DC excitation voltage to overspeed
generator shunt windings leads A and D. The wire codes L92 and L93 connect the

WARNING
This notice is to warn LeTourneau crane users against installing manual
(mechanical) or remote (electrical) means for releasing the MAIN HOOK dc hoist
motor multiple-disk brake for the purpose of EMERGENCY LOAD LOWERING.
LeTourneau, Inc. has continuously maintained that it would be extremely difficult to safely control the
lowering of a heavy load with the holding brake assemblies used on the crane models given, by releasing
either with a manual mechanism or by remote control. A release means would create the potential for
misuse or inadvertent dropping of a heavy load.
LeTourneau, Inc. will make available a remote electrical control and battery pack for releasing the
FASTLINE HOOK dc hoist motor multiple-disk brake for the purpose of EMERGENCY LOAD
LOWERING for cranes equipped with an optional 5-Ton fastline hoist used primarily for handling
personnel. This control must be used in conjunction with a hoist motor speed indicator at the operator’s
panel.
The manual brake release mechanism for the fastline hoist was determined to be no longer acceptable by
the Dutch Ministry of Mines Rules body, since the operator could not see the load from his position at the
brake release. Therefore the manual release mechanism has been discontinued.
For information about the field installable fastline hoist option and a remote electrical control and battery
pack for releasing the FASTLINE HOOK dc hoist motor multiple-disk brake, please consult the
LeTourneau factory.
Later crane models are designed with a different hoist motor holding brake that does allow the use of
EMERGENCY LOAD LOWERING.

This same procedure applies to emergency boom lowering, as both the boom hoist motor and the
hook hoist motor are equipped with the same type brake.
Personnel that are thoroughly familiar with the LeTourneau a/c multiple-disk brake must only
carry out this procedure.
The hook hoist holding brake is a fail-safe multiple-disk brake that is mounted integrally with the
hoist motor outboard end bell and the motor shaft. It is electrically released and springs applied.
See parts catalog illustration 656-4600-74.
The brake head (the release and applying means) consists of an inner magnet ring (item 32), an
outer ring and coil assembly (items 33-45) and six compression springs (item 35) secured
between them. Three (3) special 1/2NF x 4-11/16 long Grade 8 studs, three hex nuts and three
hex jam nuts (item 38) hold the two rings together against the pressure of the compression
springs.
Procedure
1. A qualified person thoroughly familiar with the LeTourneau brake assembly and an
authorized signalman must perform this procedure.
2. These workers must be located so they can visually see each other or else be provided radio
handsets.
3. Insure that no personnel are below the suspended load, and that there is a clear area in which
to set the load.

4. It is recommended that the worker who will release the brake have two wrenches – a box-end
wench and a combination box-end and open-end wrench of the proper size (3/4”).
5. Before attempting to manually release the brake, unlock and remove the three ½”NF jam nuts
from their studs, and insure that the remaining three ½” hex nuts are free to turn.
6. Use extreme caution and good judgement in following these next steps. Adjust one of the
hex nuts against the outer brake plate. Then continue to tighten nut clockwise- several turns.
With a very heavy load on the hook, the brake may begin to slip.
7. If the brake has not begun to slip, carefully tighten the second nut clockwise several turns or
until the brake does begin to slip.
8. When the brake first begins to slip and the shaft is just beginning to turn, immediately stop
the slipping by loosening this nut - turning it counter-clockwise. Tighten this nut again to
allow the shaft to rotate.
9. Proceed carefully through this process, always keeping control of the slipping and having the
ability to stop the slipping using only one nut. Keep a box end wrench on the controlling nut
at all times. Always maintain the ability to be able to stop the load by only having to
turn one nut.
11. Pay careful attention to the brake temperature. If the brake begins to heat, stop the load
lowering and allow the brake to cool.
12. After the load has been lowered to rest and the procedure has been completed, loosen the
three stud nuts until there is clearance between the nut and the outer brake plate.
13. Inspect the brake disks and replace them if necessary. Follow LeTourneau Operating
Procedures no. 461, Brake Disc Wear Check, 4/23/87 in determining condition of brake
discs.
14. Adjust the brake air-gap to 0.080” using gauge, part number 095-5056. See MOTOR
BRAKE ADJUSTMENT section 3.5.
15. Back the stud nuts away from the outer back plate and adjust each nut until there is 0.045”
clearance between it and the back plate.
The attached SAFETY ALERT – Hook Emergency Brake Release, SIL M-102, gives
LeTourneau, Inc.’s warning against installing manual (mechanical) or remote (electrical) means
for releasing the MAIN HOOK dc hoist motor multiple-disk brake for the purpose of
EMERGENCY LOAD LOWERING.

SAFETY ALERT – Hook Emergency Brake Release, SIL M-102
This Service Information Letter is to assist our customers in upgrading the operator control
“potentiometers” to automatically return to their center (neutral) positions on release as required
by API Specification 2C, Specification for Offshore Cranes. API requires this type of control
levers for boom hoist, load hoist and swing.
Dc motors power the hook hoist and the swing motions. API refers to the operator controllers
for these functions as control levers. LeTourneau calls them potentiometers. These old style
(Rotary – Maintained Position) operator control levers for the hook hoist and the swing motions
need be replaced. These potentiometers can be converted to a spring-centered style by replacing
the control handle and the lid structure. These two parts make up a ‘Head Only’ assembly. Or,
if the potentiometers are worn, it is advisable to replace the complete control lever assembly –
especially for the hook hoist control. The included table “Potentiometers, Operator
(Replacements for PCM-120AS Cranes” lists the correct part numbers for ordering. Note that
there are two styles of spring-centered potentiometers – the Rotary, motion is Clockwise and
Counter-clockwise from neutral, and the Lever, motion is Forward - away from the operator for
Lower and Backward – toward the operator for Raise. The customer has a choice of styles for
the hook hoist. Since the old maintained style potentiometers are rotary motion for both the
hook hoist and the swing, most LeTourneau crane operators will probably prefer the rotary
motion style. Further, the lever style is a more expensive mechanism.
Note: The Lever style is available for the hook hoist to comply with the DUTCH Rules.
The rotary movement of the swing potentiometer relates well to the swing motion of the crane.
Old Style. Rotary - 400-0236 400-0237 Hook pot assy. has a 50W,
Maintained Position 5,000 ohm sub-pot.
Swing pot assy. does not.
