General Comments:
Hello again LA 9 class! Once again, I hope things are going well for you. Thanks to all of you for the
work you submitted on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This week, we’ll be moving on from the play,
and you will be writing a story or an essay on a topic from a previous Provincial Achievement Test. As
always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me ([email protected]) As
mentioned before, the best time for students in this class to reach me is between 12:30 pm and 2:00
pm on what would typically be school days. (Please note that this week Friday is a holiday, so the
school week is Monday to Thursday.) Personally, I’m doing ok, although my family and I are starting
to get on one another’s nerves a bit; I guess that’s inevitable with spending so much time at home
together. Let’s have a great (slightly shortened) school week!

Learning Outcomes Being Addressed This Week:
This week, you will either write an essay or a story that touches upon a topic from a previous
Provincial Achievement Exam. Please keep in mind that if you write an essay this week, you will
have to write a story for your next assignment, and vice-versa.
The other thing to keep in mind is that only one of these two writing assignments I am asking
you to do over the next couple of school weeks will count. In other words, the one with the
better mark will count, while the other one will not. So, if you’re better at writing essays, then
you will be evaluated on that, while if you’re better at writing stories, you will be evaluated on
that.

Activity/Task #1: Write an essay or a narrative (story) about the following topic: The Importance of
Striving to Achieve Personal Goals.

Description of Activity or Task:

Please write either a narrative (story) or an essay about the above topic. Typical essays are
about 5 paragraphs. Please refer to the “Personal Response” slide presentation for how to
structure an essay. Please keep in mind that this essay is not related to any particular text, like
the previous essays you’ve done in Language Arts 9 this year (such as for the novel Unwind or
the movie The Matrix.
If you are writing a story, please consider how a story is structured. Please refer to the “Short
Story Terminology” handout, which I’ll attach. In particular, refer to section 5, which is about
plot elements. Stories for this assignment are usually about two pages (double-spaced) in
length, but length can vary depending on the type of story the student writes. I don’t mind if
they are significantly longer.

Estimate of Time Required: 2-3 hours

Resources:

1. The assignment is available here: https://education.alberta.ca/media/1224569/03-ela9-eosw-

narrative-2011.pdf Please refer to pages 13 and 14 for the actual assignment. You may also
refer to student exemplars of both stories and essays on the topic (Satisfactory level: p. 21,
Proficient level: p. 37, Excellent level: p. 55.)

Please complete an essay or a narrative (story) on the topic outlined above.

Summative Assessments This Week: The story or narrative may be a summative

assessment; the week after spring break, students will write another story or essay (the opposite
of what they choose to do this week). One of these assignments (the better one) will count for
marks.
Summary Comments:
Please submit completed assignments to: [email protected]
Please email me with any questions, also at [email protected]
Please don’t be shy about asking questions. It’s normal to be unsure about what is required.
Thanks for all the great work you’ve done so far!
