Product Overview
Remote Automation Solutions OpenEnterprise is Emerson
Process Management’s leading-edge Supervisory Control and
Data Acquisition (SCADA) package. This document provides
a brief introduction to the functionality and features of the
product.
Overview
OpenEnterprise is a client / server based SCADA package, targeting the
requirements of the oil & gas production, distribution and transmission
industries. The product is supported on current Microsoft operating systems,
and incorporates support for a wide range of industry standard database
interfaces and communications protocols.
Communications
OpenEnterprise has been designed to meet the needs of the SCADA user
with challenging communications requirements, retrieving data from remote
locations via a wide variety of communications media (radio, satellite, cellular
and hardwired media).
When combined with Emerson’s range of RTUs and flow computers,

OpenEnterprise provides a system fully-equipped to meet the challenges of low
bandwidth, high latency and poor quality networks.
As well as supporting Emerson’s primary SCADA protocols (BSAP and ROC™ /

ROC Plus), OpenEnterprise provides access to a wide range of third-party
protocols via an OPC Remote Device driver, which can be configured via a simple
‘drag-and-drop’ interface. OPC Servers are available to provide access to the vast
majority of industry standard SCADA protocols, including Modbus, Fieldbus and
DNP3.
Data Access
A SCADA system is of little use unless it can be used to integrate the data into
your Business Management Systems. Many existing systems require manual
transcription of data from the User Interface into business systems.
OpenEnterprise avoids this error prone (and time-consuming) task by providing
full ‘open’ access to all real-time, historical, and configuration data via a wide
range of industry standard interfaces – ODBC, OPC, OPCHDA, JDBC, DDE, and
SQL, to name just a few.
These interfaces can be used to connect your corporate applications to your

SCADA system, often in a matter of minutes. There is no need to purchase
proprietary middleware, connectors or APIs – direct ‘application to application’
links are usually possible. Many of our customers are exporting data to
SQLServer, Oracle, PI, Infoplus, SAP, and other industry standard platforms via
these interfaces. You can also share data with Emerson’s DeltaV™ DCS platform.
Fault Tolerance
Reliability and availability are critical for SCADA systems. OpenEnterprise has
been designed with a range of fault-tolerant and hot standby options, both for
the server hardware and communications links. Emerson’s ControlWave platform
provides for similar redundancy at the RTU level, allowing for systems that will
meet the requirements of the most demanding user.
User Interface
OpenEnterprise is fully supported on both Windows 7 and Windows 2008, and
uses the power of these operating systems to provide an intuitive user interface
that will be familiar to anyone who has used these operating systems. We provide
both ‘thick’ and ‘thin’ client options, which use a shared configuration, providing
an identical user interface to both local and remote users.
The OpenEnterprise TS Client is compatible with both Windows Terminal Services

and Citrix Metaframe. Another option for sharing data with corporate users is
OpenEnterprise WebToolkit – a set of .NET / Ajax components that can be used to
provide secure access to OpenEnterprise data within most corporate portals, and
to share data with your customers.
