Extra Exercise for Chapter 1 Functions

Question 1
Given that f (x) = 2x + 1, find f n (x) where n is a positive integer.
Answer: f n (x) = 2n x + 2n − 1

f 2 (x) = 4x + 3 (1)
3
f (x) = 8x + 7 (2)
..
. (3)
f (x) = 2 x + 2n − 1
n n

Question 2

Given that the composite function f 2 (x) = 4x + 9, find the possible expressions for
f (x).
Answer: f (x) = 2x + 3 or
f (x) = −2x − 9

Let f (x) = ax + b, then

f (x) = a2 x + b(a + 1) = 4x + 9
2

a = ±2
a = 2 =⇒ b = 3;
a = −2 =⇒ b = −9
∴ f (x) = 2x + 3 or f (x) = −2x − 9
