B. Vertical Geometric Irregularities: Width of Level2 Width of Level3 X 100 100

This document analyzes the geometric irregularities of a building with the following groups: 1. Vertical geometric irregularities - No irregularity exists as each level has the same geometry and dimensions. 2. Vertical in-plane discontinuity - No irregularity exists as offsets are less than wall element widths. 3. Reentrant corner - Irregularity exists for lines 1 to 4 as the reentrant corner is 41.67% of the total dimension. 4. Diaphragm discontinuity - Irregularity exists as the atrium area is greater than 50% of the gross floor area. 5. Out of plane offsets - Irregularity exists as a column from the

B. Vertical Geometric Irregularities

Width of Level2 13 m
= x 100=100
Width of Level3 13 m
Therefore: Irregularity doesn’t exist

For this building, the geometry of the structure per level is the same. There is no set back in each level. Hence, if
you compute the horizontal dimension of one storey over the adjacent story, it will give you a lateral resisting system of
100 percent which indicates that irregularity doesn’t exist.
C. Vertical In-plane Discontinuity

As you can see in the building, line 3-4 of the ground floor and 4 th floor are offset to the left but the width of the
offset which is 3m is less than the width of the wall elements which are 3.40m and 5.10m hence, irregularity doesn’t
exist.

D. Reentrant Corner
For lines A to D, re-entrant corner at C-D:

C−D 5.30 m
= x 100=40.77 percent
A−D 13 m

For lines 1 to 4, re-entrant corner at 1-2:

1−2 5.00 m
= x 100=41.67 percent -- Hence, irregularity exists.
1−4 12m

E. Diaphragm Discontinuity

0.50 of L1 x B1 = 0.50(12m x 13m) = 78m 2

L2 x B2 = 11.6m x 12.6m = 146.16 m 2
146.16 m2 > 78m2 -- therefore; irregularity exists

The area of opening or the Atrium which is 11.6m x 12.6m is greater than 50 percent of the area gross of 13m x
12m; irregularity exists.
F. Out of Plane Offsets

The column from the first floor, line 4, is nowhere to be seen in the adjacent floor and the third floor, hence,
irregularity exists.

G. Non-parallel System

In this building, the vertical lateral load resisting elements like the columns are parallel and symmetrical about
the axes hence, non-parallel system irregularity doesn’t exist
