The Fear of the Lord

Genesis 22:12
And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since
you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."

Exodus 1:17-21
But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male
children alive. So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing,
and saved the male children alive?" And the midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not
like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them." Therefore God
dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. And so it was, because the
midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.

Exodus 14:30-31
So the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the

"So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness
away from the midst of you. No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number
of your days. I will send My fear before you, I will cause confusion among all the people to whom you come,
and will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.”

Leviticus 25:17-19
“Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God. So you
shall observe My statutes and keep My judgments, and perform them; and you will dwell in the land in safety.
Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill, and dwell there in safety.”

Deuteronomy 4:9-10
"Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and
lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your
grandchildren, especially concerning the day you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD
said to me, 'Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the
days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.'”

Deuteronomy 6:1-2
"Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has
commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, that you
may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and
your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.”

His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep
the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?”

Deuteronomy 10:20-21

Deuteronomy 17:18-20
"Also it shall be, when [the King of Israel] sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a
copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites. And it shall be with him, and he shall
read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the
words of this law and these statutes, that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn
aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom,
he and his children in the midst of Israel.”

Deuteronomy 28:58-59
"If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this
glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, then the LORD will bring upon you and your
descendants extraordinary plagues – great and prolonged plagues – and serious and prolonged sicknesses.”

may hear and that they may learn to fear the LORD your God and carefully observe all the words of this law,
and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you
live in the land which you cross the Jordan to possess.”

Joshua 4:24
"…for the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the LORD
your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, that all the peoples of the
earth may know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever."

besieges them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is; whatever prayer,
whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the plague of his
own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this temple: then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive,
and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts
of all the sons of men), that they may fear You all the days that they live in the land which You gave to our
fathers.”

1 Kings 8:41-43
“Moreover, concerning a foreigner, who is not of Your people Israel, but has come from a far country for Your
name’s sake (for they will hear of Your great name and Your strong hand and Your outstretched arm), when he
comes and prays toward this temple, hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the
foreigner calls to You, that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and fear You, as do Your people
Israel, and that they may know that this temple which I have built is called by Your name.”

1 Kings 18:3-4

2 Kings 17:7-12
For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of
the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and they had feared other gods, and had
walked in the statutes of the nations whom the LORD had cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the
kings of Israel, which they had made. Also the children of Israel secretly did against the LORD their God things
that were not right, and they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from watchtower to fortified city.
They set up for themselves sacred pillars and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree.
There they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the LORD had carried away before
them; and they did wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger, for they served idols, of which the LORD had
said to them, "You shall not do this thing."

1 Kings 17:25
And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the LORD; therefore the LORD sent
lions among them, which killed some of them.

2 Kings 17:27-28
Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, “Send there one of the priests whom you brought from there; let
him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the rituals of the God of the land. “Then one of the priests
whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the
LORD.

2 Kings 17:34-40
To this day they continue practicing the former rituals; they do not fear the LORD, nor do they follow their
statutes or their ordinances, or the law and commandment which the LORD had commanded the children of
Jacob, whom He named Israel, with whom the LORD had made a covenant and charged them, saying: "You
shall not fear other gods, nor bow down to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them; but the LORD, who
brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm, Him you shall fear, Him you
shall worship, and to Him you shall offer sacrifice. And the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the
commandment which He wrote for you, you shall be careful to observe forever; you shall not fear other gods.
And the covenant that I have made with you, you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods. But the LORD
your God you shall fear; and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies." However they did not
obey, but they followed their former rituals.

1 Chronicles 16:24-27
Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples. For the LORD is great and greatly to be
praised; He is also to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the
heavens. Honor and majesty are before Him; Strength and gladness are in His place.

the cities, for there was exceedingly much spoil in them.

2 Chronicles 6:28-31
“When there is famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; when their enemies
besiege them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is; whatever prayer, whatever
supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows his own burden and his own
grief, and spreads out his hands to this temple: then hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and give
to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of the sons of
men), that they may fear You, to walk in Your ways as long as they live in the land which You gave to our
fathers.”

heart…”

Nehemiah 5:15

besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because of
the fear of God.

Nehemiah 7:1-2
Then it was, when the wall was built and I had hung the doors, when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites

Job fear God for nothing?”

the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.' "

Psalm 2:10-12
Now, therefore, be wise, O kings; be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice
with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 5:4-7
For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not
stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The LORD
abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your
mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.

Psalm 15:1-5
LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?
He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart;
He who does not backbite with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor does he take up a reproach against
his friend;
In whose eyes a vile person is despised, but he honors those who fear the LORD; he who swears to his own hurt
and does not change;
He who does not put out his money at usury, nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be moved.

Psalm 19:7-11
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing
the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than
much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.

Psalm 22:22-23
I will declare Your name to My brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise You.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.
Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and
pursue it.
The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.

Psalm 36:1-4
An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked:
There is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flatters himself in his own eyes,
When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates. The words of his mouth are wickedness
and deceit;
He has ceased to be wise and to do good. He devises wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil.

They shall fear You
As long as the sun and moon endure,

He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing,
Like showers that water the earth.
In His days the righteous shall flourish,
And abundance of peace,
Until the moon is no more.

Psalm 76:4-9
You are more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. The stouthearted were plundered; they have
sunk into their sleep; and none of the mighty men have found the use of their hands.
At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep.
You, Yourself, are to be feared; and who may stand in Your presence when once You are angry?
You caused judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared and was still,
When God arose to judgment, to deliver all the oppressed of the earth. Selah.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father pities his children, so the LORD pities those who fear Him.
For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.
As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to
children's children, To such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them.

LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The
Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD, and He shall not judge
by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness He shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with
the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, and faithfulness the
belt of His waist.

Isaiah 25:1-4
O LORD, You are my God.
I will exalt You,
I will praise Your name,

A fortified city a ruin,
A palace of foreigners to be a city no more;
It will never be rebuilt.

Therefore the strong people will glorify You;
The city of the terrible nations will fear You.
For You have been a strength to the poor,
A strength to the needy in his distress,
A refuge from the storm,
A shade from the heat;
For the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,

My word.

Jeremiah 5:21-25
'Hear this now, O foolish people, Without understanding, Who have eyes and see not, And who have ears and
hear not: Do you not fear Me?' says the LORD. 'Will you not tremble at My presence, Who have placed the sand
as the bound of the sea, By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it? And though its waves toss to and
fro, Yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it. But this people has a defiant and
rebellious heart; They have revolted and departed. They do not say in their heart, "Let us now fear the LORD our
God, Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the
harvest." Your iniquities have turned these things away, And your sins have withheld good from you.’

Jeremiah 10:7
Who would not fear You, O King of the nations?
For this is Your rightful due.
For among all the wise men of the nations,
And in all their kingdoms,
There is none like You.

But we are doing great evil against ourselves."

with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will
not depart from Me.

Hosea 10:1-4
Israel empties his vine; He brings forth fruit for himself. According to the multitude of his fruit He has increased
the altars; According to the bounty of his land They have embellished his sacred pillars. Their heart is divided;
Now they are held guilty. He will break down their altars; He will ruin their sacred pillars. For now they say, "We
have no king, Because we did not fear the LORD. And as for a king, what would he do for us?" They have
spoken words, Swearing falsely in making a covenant. Thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of
the field.

Jonah 1:9
So [Jonah] said to them, "I am a Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry
land."

messenger, spoke the LORD's message to the people, saying, "I am with you, says the LORD."

Malachi 2:4-6
“Then you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, That My covenant with Levi may continue,"
Says the LORD of hosts. "My covenant was with him, one of life and peace, And I gave them to him that he

injustice was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and equity, And turned many away from
iniquity.”

Malachi 3:16
Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, And the LORD listened and heard them; So a book of

shall be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them as a
man spares his how son who serves him.”

can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell;
yes, I say to you, fear Him!
Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very
hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

Luke 18:1-8
Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: "There was in a
certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to
him, saying, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within
himself, 'Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by
her continual coming she weary me.'" Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not
avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will
avenge them speedily.

Hebrews 5:5-8
So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "YOU ARE MY
SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU." As He also says in another place: "YOU ARE A PRIEST
FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK"; who, in the days of His flesh, when He
had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him
from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the
things which He suffered.

Hebrews 11:6-7
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is

became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
