General, Description Complate Machine
y V-ECU Located left side in the cab in front of the circuit board. Handles brakes, gearshifting, steering and cooling fan
control on the machine.
y V2–ECU Located left side in the cab in front of the circuit board. Handles dumping system, Load & dump brake, ATC,
differential locks, and brake cooling oil circuit. Full Suspension, if installed, is also handled by the V2–ECU.
y E-ECU Located left side on engine. Handles engine.
y W-ECU (optional equipment) Located left side in cab over the circuit board. Handles CareTrack (telematic system for
remote monitoring of information from machine).
y HMIM-ECU Located left side in cab over the circuit board. Handles information to instrumentation, information display
unit, warning lights, and instruments, and using these gives the operator information.
y ECC-ECU Located in cab on right side under the gear selector. Handles the climate control system/air conditioning.
Power transmission
The transmission is fully automatic and of the planetary gear type. It has a torque converter with free-wheel stator and
automatic direct clutch (Lock-up) in all gears. The machine has nine forward gears and three reverse gears.
The dropbox has a differential that distributes the torque and reduces road wear as well as fuel consumption. The longitudinal
differential features a lock function.
ATC Automatic Traction Control is standard and automatically controls the longitudinal differential lock's engagement and
disengagement when needed.
The drive axles are equipped with a differential and planetary gear hub reductions. All drive axles have differential lock.
Brakes
Engine brake Depending on setting of switches, the engine brake reduces wear of the brakes.
Service brake
The machine features hydraulically operated wet brakes and has two brake circuits, one for the front circuit and one for the rear
circuit.
Parking brake
Compressed air-operated, spring-applied disc brake acting on the trailer's propeller shaft. Acts on both front axle and front
bogie axle by automatic activation of the differential lock in the dropbox.
Steering
The steering system is self-compensating, hydromechanical with secondary steering function. A ground-dependent pump on the
dropbox means that the steering works even if the engine stops.
Frame, suspension
Machines with the addition of 'FS' in the model designation feature a gas-hydraulic suspension system (FS- Full Suspension).
Cab
The cab features an automatically controlled heating and ventilation system with defroster system for the windows. Air
conditioning is available as an option. The cab has three emergency exits, the door and the front side windows on both right and
left side. These are broken with the hammer in the cab if evacuation is necessary that way.
FOPS/ROPS
The cab is approved as a protective cab according to FOPS and ROPS-standards. FOPS is an abbreviation of Falling Object
Protective Structure (roof protection) and ROPS is an abbreviation of Roll Over Protective Structure. If any part of the cab's
protective structure is affected by plastic deformation or failures, the cab shall be replaced immediately. Never make any
unauthorized changes to the cab, e.g., lowering the roof height, drilling, welding of brackets for fire extinguishers, radio antenna,
or other equipment without first discussing the change with Volvo, via a dealer. Volvo decides if the change can lead to
nullification of the approval.
Hydraulics
The hydraulic system has six hydraulic pumps, piston pumps with continuous variable displacement. There are three pumps for
the steering and dumping system, two for fan drive (one pump of 45 cc and one of 28 cc). The bigger pump also drives
circulation of brake cooling oil as well as coolant circulation in the secondary circuit. A ground-dependent hydraulic pump on
the dropbox. The ground-dependent pump delivers oil through a non-return valve to the rest of the hydraulic system when the
machine rolls forward. The radiator's fan pump on all F-series' machines also supplies the brake system with pressure via PWM-
valves that change between brake charging and cooling.
