Preface
This manual is designed as a technical training aid, it is not to replace the workshop
manual or operators manual, but should be used in conjunction with these, where
detailed procedures are given, and further detailed service information is provided.

Cylinder Head
When installing the cylinder head ensure that both mating surfaces are clean.
To re-fit the cylinder head install two guide studs at the end of the cylinder block,
install the gasket, note it is stamped front top for identification. Carefully lower the
cylinder head into position clean the threads of the bolts, lightly lubricate, and install.
Carry out the tightening sequences as specified in the corresponding workshop
manual.
NOTE: On P4000/P4001 and 1006.6 engines there are three different lengths of
bolts, ensure they are fitted in the correct holes then continuing the sequence, torque
the bolts to the correct angle, as per workshop manual.
Valve Clearance
The valve adjustment consists of setting the specified clearance between the rocker
arms and valves.
See workshop manual for correct firing order and setting sequence.

Pistons and Connecting Rods
The piston is of a one-piece construction machined from aluminium. The skirt of the
piston is coated in graphite to reduce friction during the running in period.
The piston is connected to the con-rod by the gudgeon pin.
It is important that if pistons and con-rods are removed they are marked up with the
number of the cylinder they were removed from. Pistons and con-rods should both be
marked if they are to be split from each other. This will ensure that parts removed will
be fitted into their original positions.
Note:
The use of a file or centre punch to mark components is not recommended,
premature failure of the component can result from this practise.
AD3.152 3Cyl
The pistons are available in different height grades to ensure close control of
compression ratio, when carrying out engine overhaul ensure the same height piston
is refitted.
A4.236 4Cyl
There are three different grades of piston fitted at the factory L, M and H. In service
however there is only L grade available.
P4000
1006.6
Two grades of piston can be fitted in the factory but there is only one available for
service repair.
