PRODUCT CATALOGUE
BUILDING CODE - DURABILITY
The Building Code places the responsibility on manufacturers to clearly state:
(a) the conditions for which products are or are not suitable;
(b) the durability and frequency of maintenance for the products continued acceptable performance.
Specifically, the Building Code categorises durability in the following way:
Clause B2.3
(b) For services to which access is difficult, and for hidden fixing of the external envelope and attached structures of a building: the life
of the building being not less than 50 years.
(c) For other fixings of the building envelope and attached structures, the building envelope, lining supports and other building elements
having moderate ease of access but which are difficult to replace: 15 years.
(d) For linings, renewable protective coatings, fittings and other building elements to which there is ready access: 5 years.
Iplex Pipelines have decided to adopt the following clause used by B.R.A.N.Z. in their appraisal certificates for products such as the pipe
and fittings that we manufacture.
Durability
The pipe or fitting will have a service life that is compatible with other pipe and fittings manufactured to the relevant NZ Standard and
any other recognised Standard if appropriate.
Thus correctly designed and installed drainage or pressure systems using Iplex Pipelines' pipes or fittings will satisfy the performance
requirements of both N.Z.B.C. Clause B2.3 (b) (50 years - services to which access is difficult and N.Z.B.C. Clause B2.3 (c) (15 years - services
to which access is moderate but are difficult to replace).
Clauses (b) and (c) cover the majority of applications for products of our own manufacture, with the exception of rainwater and rural
polyethylene pipe used above ground which satisfy the requirements of N.Z.B.C. Clause B 2.3 (d). (5 years – services which have ready
access)
UNSUITABLE APPLICATIONS
1. Iplex Pipelines PVC pressure pipes should not be used:
(i) as a conductor for earthing electrical appliances
(ii) with aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, esters and ethers
Refer to ‘A Guide to Chemical Resistance of Thermoplastic and Elastomeric Materials’ - available from Iplex Pipelines
(iii) at continuous service temperature above 60∞C (uPVC) or 55∞C (mPVC)
(iv) where provision for pressure derating has not been made above 35∞C
(v) with compressed air
(vi) without adequate support to the pipe both in above ground and below ground applications
(vii) without adequate thrust support
(viii)where depth of cover is less than
• 300mm where pipeline is not subject to vehicular loading
• 450mm where pipeline is subject to vehicular loading not in roadways
• 600mm where pipeline is subject to vehicular loading in sealed roadways
• 750mm where pipeline is subject to vehicular loading in unsealed roadways
• 750mm where pipeline is subject to construction equipment loading
(ix) where working pressure + surge/cyclic pressure exceeds the nominated pressure/performance rating of the pipe
(x) when exposed to direct sunlight above ground for long term applications, without protection. This protection may include
pale coloured UV resistant paint systems or physical shading
(xi) where service connections are directly tapped into the pipe wall
2. Iplex Pipelines polyethylene pipes are not suitable for use in the following applications:
(i) as a conductor for earthing electrical appliances
(ii) all fire-rated applications
(iii) exposure to direct sunlight in service (except black pipe)
(iv) continuous service above 60∞C internal or external temperature.
(v) pressure pipes in continuous services up to 60∞C internal or external temperature, where provision for pressure derating has not
been made
(vi) carrying chemicals outside the range advised by Iplex Pipelines
(vii) without adequate support to the pipe in above ground and below ground applications
(viii)where working pressure + surge/cyclic pressure exceeds the nominated pressure/performance rating of the pipe
(ix) where incorrect depth of cover is applied
(x) the conveying of anti-bloat agents containing detergent or detergent-like compounds (except Iplex rural pressure pipes)
3. Iplex Pipelines PVC Drain, Waste & Vent pipes should not be used:
(i) with aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, esters and ethers
(ii) for pumped pressure applications
(iii) at continuous service temperatures above 60∞C or for intermittent discharges of liquid above 75∞C
(iv) without adequate support to the pipe both in above ground and below ground applications
(v) without adequate thrust support
(vi) in below ground applications where depth of cover is less than:
• 300mm where pipeline is not subject to vehicular loading
• 450mm where pipeline is subject to vehicular loading not in roadways
• 600mm where pipeline is subject to vehicular loading in sealed roadways
• 750mm where pipeline is subject to vehicular loading in unsealed roadways
• 750mm where pipeline is subject to construction equipment loading
(vii) when exposed to direct sunlight above ground for long term applications, without protection. This protection may include
pale coloured U.V. resistant paint systems or physical shading.
