Shaping The Future Of: Protein

Freshrooms Lifesciences is developing a solution to mass produce black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as a sustainable source of protein for animal feed. Their process involves breeding BSFL, feeding them organic waste to reduce volume, and processing the larvae into protein meal and oil. This closes the loop on organic waste while providing a profitable, environmentally friendly alternative protein source for aquafeed, poultry, and other markets projected to grow substantially in the coming years. Freshrooms' technology aims to optimize the BSFL lifecycle and production process to industrialize it for large-scale, cost-effective operations.

WHY BLACK SOLDIER FLY

VORACIOUS APPETITE
1 An individual larva can multiply their body weight by more than 10,000 times within 12 days.

SUSTAINABLE & ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY

2 Easier to raise, use less water, feed on broad range of organics,
and produce less greenhouse gases than other livestock.

HIGHER WASTE REDUCTION MATING & EGG

OUR INNOVATION PROCESS

The innovation areas were prioritized as points in the system where change would have the
greatest impact.
Having set out our ambition, we investigated the barriers to progress and ran innovation
processes with over 7 years to find the most creative and powerful solutions.
The commercial projects are designed to address these barriers
systemically: combining several solutions, working collaboratively Learning
and looking long-term, whilst at the same time matching our
partners’ capabilities.

The company is focusing initially on the aquafeed market, where demand is increasing year on
year to satisfy growing consumer appetites for farmed fish.

Worth over USD 114 billion in 2017, aquafeed is predicted to grow by a factor of 2.5 in just eight
years to nearly USD 290 billion in 2026. (Source: Reuters/MRC Statistics, March 2018).

Several studies have shown potential to replace between 10% to 50% of the soymeal feed used
in poultry and cattle applications. Soymeal market size accounts for approximately 65% of the
total animal feed and is projected to exceed over 1.5 billion tons by 2024. It can be anticipated
that, edible insects market size can replace 300 million tons of animal feed.
