1 Introduction
This instruction describes how to replace or install internal supplementary parts in an RBS
6201 V2.

The internal supplementary parts are the following:

 8U subrack
 2U DU adaptor

1.1 Prerequisites
This section contains information on the documents, tools, and conditions that apply to the
procedure.

 A work order is available.


 The operating instruction that referred to these instructions must be available, if
applicable.
 All necessary equipment is available.
 All keys are available and site access is granted.

2 Removing an 8U Subrack
This section describes how to remove an 8U subrack.

Do!

Always use an approved ESD wrist strap when working with sensitive
equipment. Damage to components mounted on printed board
assemblies can occur if an ESD wrist strap is not used.

To remove an 8U subrack, perform the following procedure:

1. Inform the Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) that work is to start at the site.
The OMC can then decide what measures are necessary to minimize service
disruptions.
2. Open the cabinet door.
3. Put on the ESD wrist strap and connect the cable to the ESD earth grounding point on
the cabinet.
4. Remove the straps holding the cables together.
5. Disconnect and remove all the units from the 8U subrack.
6. Use a T30 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the eight screws holding the 8U subrack.
7. Remove the 8U subrack from the cabinet.

3 Installing an 8U Subrack
This section describes how to install a supplementary 8U subrack in the RBS.

The different locations of the subrack is described in RBS Description.

3.1 Preparing the Work


Prior to starting the installation, do the following:

Always use an approved ESD wrist strap when working with sensitive
equipment. Damage to components mounted on printed board
assemblies can occur if an ESD wrist strap is not used.

1. Inform the Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) that work is to start at the site.
The OMC can then decide what measures are necessary to minimize service
disruptions.
2. Open the cabinet door.
3. Put on the ESD wrist strap and connect the cable to the ESD earth grounding point on
the cabinet.
4. Unpack the 8U subrack to be installed and check that it is undamaged.

The following sections describe how to install the 8U subrack in two different configurations:

 In a -48 V DC configuration, go to Section 3.2.


 In a PSU based configuration, go to Section 3.3.

3.2 Installing in a -48 V DC Configuration


To install an 8U subrack in a typical -48 V DC configuration, perform the following
procedure.

Note: Units mentioned in the procedure are installed when applicable. In


configurations where certain units are not used, they must be substituted by
blocking plates (0.5U) for climate reasons.

All units and plates, except for the subrack shelf, are attached to the 19 inch
rack by T30 Torx screws and cage nuts. The nuts must be put in place from the
inside of the cabinet before inserting the unit or plate. This information is not
repeated in the step-list. For detailed information, see Section 3.2.2.

Note: If a DU adaptor also is to be installed, its support brackets should be installed


before the 8U subrack is inserted. For more information, see Section 4.

3.2.1 Overview

When installing an 8U subrack, some items are moved and some items are added. Figure 1
shows an overview of the installation procedure.

3.2.2 Cage Nut Positions

Before inserting the T30 Torx screws for the items attached to the front of the 19 inch rack,
cage nuts have to be put in place from the inside of the cabinet. Figure 2 shows the
positions of these added cage nuts.

3.2.3 Procedure

1. Start by reading through the following instructions and disconnect all applicable cables
after making notes of the connections.
2. If applicable remove the blocking plates, PDU, and the PFU below the existing
subrack. They will be reinserted in Step 10 and Step 11.
3. Below the existing subrack, on the inner walls, there are four ventilation holes with
cover plates on each side.

Remove the three upper cover plates, allowing a proper air flow for the new
configuration.

4. Remove the combined air blocking plate and cable shelf underneath the existing
subrack by unscrewing the two screws completely on the left side holding it.

Then bend it down slightly on the left hand side while pulling it out of the long and
narrow holes on the right hand side.

If no DU adaptor is to be installed, the air blocking plate will be reattached in a lower


position in Step 5. If a DU adaptor is to be installed the air blocking plate is to be
removed and the DU adaptor is to be installed. Perform the procedure in Section
4.2.3, then continue to Step 8.

5. Attach the previously removed air blocking plate/cable shelf under the third ventilation
hole using the three long narrow holes on the right hand side.

Start by inserting and fastening the two screws with a T20 Torx screwdriver on the
opposite side, then put the plate in place from above letting it rest on the screws and
then tighten them.

6. Fasten the air blocking plate/cable shelf in the front with two screws using a T30 Torx
screwdriver.

7. Attach the narrow cable shelf below the existing subrack fastening two screws with a
T30 Torx screwdriver.
8. Reinsert the PDU below the existing subrack and the narrow cable shelf fastening two
screws with a T30 Torx screwdriver.

9. Insert the subrack support plate and tighten the two screws using a T20 Torx bit.

10. Insert the new subrack below the PDU and attach it by fastening four screws on each
side with a T30 Torx screwdriver.

11. If applicable, insert and attach the previously removed PFU on top of the air blocking
plate/cable shelf. If applicable, also insert and attach a second PFU on top of the first.

12. Make sure all T30 rack screws are tightened. Connect previously disconnected cables
with regard to the new configuration.

Note: Before powering up the RBS, the second subrack must be filled with units
and/or dummies. Otherwise the climate system will not function properly.

3.3 Installing in a PSU Configuration


To install an 8U subrack in a typical PSU configuration, perform the following procedure.

Note: Units mentioned in the procedure are installed when applicable. In


configurations where certain units are not used, they must be substituted by
blocking plates (0.5U) for climate reasons.

All units and plates are attached to the 19 inch rack by T30 Torx screws and
cage nuts. The nuts must be put in place from the inside of the cabinet before
inserting the unit or plate. This information is not repeated in the step-list. For
detailed information, see Section 3.3.2.

Note: If a DU adaptor also is to be installed, its support brackets must be installed


before the 8U subrack is inserted. For more information, see Section 4.

3.3.1 Overview

When installing an 8U subrack some items are moved and some items are added. Figure 3
shows an overview of the installation procedure.

3.3.2 Cage Nut Positions

Before inserting the T30 Torx screws for the items attached to the front of the 19 inch rack,
cage nuts have to be put in place from the inside of the cabinet. Figure 4 shows the
positions of these added cage nuts.

3.3.3 Procedure

1. Start by reading through the following instructions and disconnect all applicable cables
after making notes of the connections.
2. If applicable remove the blocking plates and the PDU below the existing subrack. The
PDU will be reinserted in Step 8.
3. Below the existing subrack, on the inner walls, there are three ventilation holes with
cover plates on each side.

Remove the three cover plates, allowing a proper air flow for the new configuration.

4. Remove the combined air blocking plate and cable shelf underneath the existing

If no DU adaptor is to be installed, the air blocking plate will be reattached in a lower


position in Step 5. If a DU adaptor is to be installed the air blocking plate is to be
removed and the DU adaptor is to be installed. Perform the procedure in Section
4.3.3, and then continue to Step 8.

5. Attach the previously removed air blocking plate/cable shelf under the third ventilation
hole using the three long narrow holes on the right hand side.

Start by inserting and fastening the two screws with a T20 Torx screwdriver on the
opposite side, then put the plate in place from above letting it rest on the screws and
then tighten them.

6. Fasten the air blocking plate/cable shelf in the front with two screws using a T30 Torx
screwdriver.

7. Attach the narrow cable shelf below the existing subrack fastening two screws with a
T30 Torx screwdriver.
8. Reinsert the PDU below the existing subrack and the narrow cable shelf fastening two
screws with a T30 Torx screwdriver.

9. Insert the new subrack below the PDU and attach it by fastening four screws on each
side with a T30 Torx screwdriver.

10. Make sure all T30 rack screws are tightened. Connect previously disconnected cables
with regard to the new

11. Perform the procedure in Section 5.

Note: Before powering up the RBS, the second subrack must be filled with units

4 Installing a DU adaptor
This section describes how to install a 2U DU adaptor below the lowest 8U subrack in an
RBS equipped with two subracks.

4.1 Preparing the Work


Prior to starting the installation, do the following:

1. Inform the Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) that work is to start at the site.

2. Open the cabinet door.
3. Put on the ESD wrist strap and connect the cable to the ESD earth grounding point on
the cabinet.
4. Unpack the DU adaptor and check that it is undamaged.

The following sections describe how to install the DU adaptor in two different configurations:

 In a -48 V DC configuration, go to Section 4.2.2.


 In a PSU based configuration, go to Section 4.3.2.

4.2 Installing in a -48 V DC Configuration


To install the DU adaptor in a typical -48 V DC configuration, perform the following
procedure.

Note: Units mentioned in the procedure are installed when applicable. In


configurations where certain units are not used, they must be substituted by
blocking plates (0.5U) for climate reasons.

All units and plates are attached to the 19 inch rack by T30 Torx screws and
cage nuts. The nuts must be put in place from the inside of the cabinet before

4.2.2 Cage Nut Positions

Before inserting the T30 Torx screws for the DU adaptor, cage nuts have to be put in place
from the inside of the cabinet. Figure 6 shows the positions of these added cage nuts.

1. Start by reading through the following instructions and disconnect all applicable cables

Note: Cables only need to be removed if they block the physical access to the
location where the DU adaptor is to be installed.

2. Remove the combined air blocking plate and cable shelf underneath the existing
lowest subrack by unscrewing the two screws completely on the left side holding it.

Then bend it down slightly on the left hand side while pulling it out of the long and
narrow holes on the right hand side. Refer to the picture in Step 5 in Section 3.3.3.

3. Underneath the lowest PFU install a support bracket on each side of the empty
compartment.

4. Insert the DU adaptor over the support brackets and attach it by fastening two screws
on each side of the rack.

5. Perform the procedure in Section 5.

Note: Before powering up the RBS any non-used DU slot in the 8U subracks or in the
DU adaptor must be filled with dummy units, otherwise the climate system will
not function properly.

4.3 Installing in a PSU Configuration


To install the DU adaptor in a typical PSU configuration, perform the following procedure.

Note: Units mentioned in the procedure are installed when applicable. In


configurations where certain units are not used, they must be substituted by
blocking plates (0.5U) for climate reasons.

All units and plates are attached to the 19 inch rack by T30 Torx screws and
cage nuts. The nuts must be put in place from the inside of the cabinet before
inserting the DU adaptor unit. This information is not repeated in the step-list.
For detailed information, see Section 3.3.2.

4.3.1 Overview

When installing a DU adaptor one item is removed and some items are added. Figure 7
shows an overview of the installation procedure.

Note: In a PSU configuration with two 8U subracks there is only a 3U high


compartment available under the lowest 8U subrack unit, to fit cage nuts and
the support brackets for the DU adaptor. To be able to remove the air blocking
plate the lower subrack must be removed.

4.3.2 Cage Nut Positions

Before inserting the T30 Torx screws for the DU adaptor, cage nuts have to be put in place
from the inside of the cabinet. Figure 8 shows the positions of these added cage nuts.

4.3.3 Procedure

1. Start by reading through the following instructions and disconnect all applicable cables
after making notes of the connections.
Note: Cables only need to be removed if they block the physical access to the
location where the DU adaptor is to be installed.

2. Before removing the subrack insert the cage nuts for the DU adaptor.
3. Remove the lowest subrack. See Section 2.
Note: It must be removed to make it possible to remove the air blocking plate.

4. Remove the combined air blocking plate and cable shelf underneath the removed
subrack by unscrewing the two screws completely on the left side holding it.

Then bend it up slightly on the left hand side while pulling it out of the long and
narrow holes on the right hand side. Refer to the picture in Step 5 in Section 3.3.3.

5. Insert a DU adaptor support bracket on each side at the height of where the previous
air blocking plate was located. For reference, see the figure at Step 3 in Section 4.2.3.
The location is now just above the large hole in the side plates.
6. Insert the DU adaptor over the support brackets and attach it by fastening two screws
on each side of the rack. For reference, see the figure at Step 4 in Section 4.2.3.
7. Perform the procedure in Section 5.

Note: Before powering up the RBS, any non-used DU slot in the 8U subracks or in the
DU adaptor must be filled with dummy units, otherwise the climate system will
not function properly.

5 Performing Concluding Routines


Follow the instructions in the work order or the operating instruction that refers to this
document.

Before leaving the site, perform the following procedure:

1. Make sure that the RBS is operational and that no alarm is active (more information
about optical indicators can be found in Interpreting Optical Indicators).
Note: Reaching final indicator status can take up to 30 minutes.

2. Disconnect the ESD wrist strap.


3. Collect all tools.
4. Inform the OMC that the work is finished at the site.
5. Close and lock the cabinet.
6. Complete the work order.
7. Follow the procedures for the return and disposal of replacement parts and the
disposal of packing. Information about how to handle faulty equipment is described in
Handling Faulty Equipment.
8. Lock all doors and gates to the site.
