Overview
The DNA Puzzle Kit enables students to use specially designed puzzle pieces to
visualize and model molecular events. Using the puzzle pieces, students may
better visualize and understand the relationship of DNA to the various RNAs and
to polypeptide (protein) formation. The three modeling exercises incorporated into
the DNA Puzzle Kit are designed to be conducted in sequence. In the first activity,
DNA: The Genetic Code, students model nucleotide structure and DNA replication.
In the second, RNA: The Code Transcribed, they learn about RNA and they model
transcription. In the final activity, Protein Synthesis: The Code Translated, students
use the DNA puzzle to model translation and demonstrate how amino acids
code for proteins.

Background
Note: For additional background information, please refer to the Student Guide.
The sequential processing of genetic information via transcription, translation, and
protein synthesis is regarded as the central dogma of molecular biology.
Understanding these events is crucial to comprehending biological processes on
the molecular scale.
