The key takeaways are about electrochemistry concepts like standard reduction potential, electrolysis, lead acid batteries and types of electrolytes.

During discharging, lead(II) sulfate is reduced to lead at the cathode and lead is oxidized to lead(II) sulfate at the anode. During charging, the reverse reactions occur.

Strong electrolytes dissociate completely in solution while weak electrolytes only dissociate partially. Strong electrolytes have a degree of dissociation close to 1 while weak electrolytes have a degree of dissociation less than 1.

(b) Fuel cell is an electrochemical cell in which chemical energy of fuel is directly converted into electrical energy. It
converts the energy from the combustion of fuels such as H2, CO, CH4 etc directly into the electrical energy.

Fuel cell is designed in such a way that the materials to be oxidised at anode and reduced at cathode are stored
outside the electrodes , so as to maintain a constant supply. One of the most successful fuel cell is the H2-O2 fuel
cell. The H2-O2 fuel cell consists of a porous electrodes  lled with catalysts like Pt,Ag etc.

Hydrogen fuel, or hydrogen-oxygen fuel, has many bene ts over other fuel forms, making it a potential leader in
alternative fuel technology.
Emissions: When looking at the advantages of hydrogen fuel, one of the most commonly known bene ts is that
cars using this fuel emit only water vapor from the tail pipe. This water then evaporates back into the air, completing
a cycle. This is one of the most desirable bene ts of using hydrogen fuel.

E ciency:Gasoline is less e cient than hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen has a higher energy density per unit of nt of fuel.
Or travel the same distance on a smaller amount of fuel, which could lead to smaller fuel tanks and roomier
vehicles. It is estimated that hydrogen vehicles can travel at least twice the distance of a regular car running on
gasoline using the same amount of fuel.mass than gasoline, which means that cars will be able to travel farther on
the same amount.

Given λ°(H+) = 349.6 S cm2 mol−1 and λ°(CH3COO−) = 40.9 S cm2 mol−1

SOLUTION:
The degree of dissociation of a weak electrolyte is given by the following relation
α = Λm / Λ0 ... Equation (1)
where α is the degree of dissociation of the electrolyte, Λm is the molar conductivity and Λ0 is the molar conductivity
at in nite dilution.

t = 900 s
Charge = Current × Time = 2 A × 900 s = 1800 C
According to the reaction:

For electroplating of iron, we require cathode couple that gives positive Eocell value.

When we compare the values of given options, we get

Eocell = Eocathode − Eoanode

Case 1
Eocell = E°(A2+/A) − E°(Fe2+/Fe) = (−2.37 + 0.44) = −1.93 V

Case 2
Eocell = E°(B2+/B) − E°(Fe2+/Fe) = (−0.14 + 0.44) = 0.3 V

Due to B's positive E° value, it is the obvious choice for coating the surface of iron.

Mercury cell is a type of primary battery. In primary batteries, the charging reaction occurs only once and after it has
been used over a period of time, the battery becomes dead and cannot be reused.
Mercury cell is more advantageous than dry cell because dry cell has a very short life span due to the conversion of
zinc to zinc chloride that makes the zinc casing porous. Due to this porous casing, the substance inside the cell
leaks out and corrodes the metal, reducing the lifetime of the cell. While, in the case of mercury cell, the overall
reaction does not involve formation of any ion in the solution whose concentration can change during its life time.

The standard electrode potential (E°) for Daniell cell is + 1·1 V. Calculate the ΔG° for the reaction (2)

(1 F = 96500 C mol−1).

SOLUTION:
E° for Daniel cell = 1.1 V

Zn(s) + Cu2+ (aq) → Zn2+ (aq) + Cu(s)

1F = 96500 C mol−1

ΔG° = ?

n = 2 (no. of e−s exchanged)

Since, ΔG° = −nFE°

Therefore, ΔG° = −2 × 96500 × 1.1

ΔG° = −212300 J mol−1

ΔG° = −212.3 kJ mol−1

(i) Alkaline medium decreases the availability of ions. In the rusting of iron, ions facilitate the oxidation of iron
by rst picking up electrons produced from water, and then, by reducing the oxygen. Thus, alkaline medium inhibits
the rusting of iron.
(ii) The layer of zinc on the surface of iron produces a protective layer of basic zinc carbonate [ZnCO3.Zn(OH)2]. This
is produced by the reaction between zinc, carbon dioxide and moisture in air. Also, zinc, being more electropositive,
undergoes oxidation rst.

Thus, even if the zinc coating is broken in a galvanised iron pipe, iron does not rust because of the protective layer
of basic zinc carbonate.

SOLUTION:
(a) Electrical conductivity of a solution is the conductance of the solution enclosed in a cell containing two
electrodes having unit cross-sectional area and separated by one cm.
Molar conductivity of a solution at a given concentration is the conductance of volume V of the solution containing
1 mole of the electrolyte kept between two electrodes having the area of cross-section A and separated by a
