13 Colonies Regions Notes

New England Colonies

Colonies in the Region: ​Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut

Cities in the Region: ​Boston, Plymouth

Crops/ Products: -​long winters, thin rocky soil- subsistence farming, corn, beans, pumpkins
-​shipbuilding, fish, fur, rum, lumber
-​many small businesses run by streams and water power

People (nationalities/ religions): ​Boston founded by Puritans, Plymouth founded by Pilgrims; both searching for
religious freedom

Relationship with Natives: ​Lived peacefully at first with Natives. As more settlers came, Natives began to fight back
(King Philip’s War)

Other notes: ​Colonists signed ​Mayflower Compact​ to govern them

Middle Colonies

Colonies in the Region: ​New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware

Cities in the Region: ​New York City (formerly New Amsterdam) and Philadelphia

Crops/ Products: m​ ild climate and rich farmland; lots of cash crops- grain (wheat)
​used to make flour

People (nationalities/ religions): -​Founded by Dutch West India Company


-​settlers included Germans, Swedes, Finns, which led to cultural diversity
-​Quakers founded Pennsylvania (William Penn)- known for their beliefs in equality
and pacifism
-​North America’s first Jewish settlers

Relationship with Natives: ​William Penn believed Natives should be compensated for their land

Other notes: ​Most of the middle colonies were proprietary colonies (run by patrons)

Southern Colonies

Colonies in the Region: ​Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

Cities in the Region: ​Annapolis, Jamestown, Williamsburg, Raleigh, Savannah

Crops/ Products:-​Rich farmland- cash crops- tobacco, rice, indigo


-​strong economic system based on enslaved Africans, indentured servants

People (nationalities/ religions):-​Maryland founded by George and Calvert Cecil as a safe haven for English Catholics
-​By 1692 there were more Protestants than Catholics
-​many settlers, especially in Georgia, were English criminals and debtors
-​Scottish and Irish prisoners shipped to colonies to work off their sentences
Relationship with Natives: -​Bacon’s Rebellion- settlers led by Nathaniel Bacon rebelled against colonial policy
intended to protect Native lands by keeping settlers in eastern VA
Other notes:-​Political system based on wealthy plantation (large farm) owners
-​Georgia was also founded to protect other British colonies from the Spanish in Florida
