Combined Gas Law

 Lesson5 chapters
 Questions

Objective
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to describe the relationship between pressure, volume,
and temperature of a gas at constant number of moles.

How are the temperature, volume, and pressure of a gas related at constant number of
moles?

Learn about it!

Combined Gas Law

Combined gas law presents the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature. It is the
combination of Boyle's, Charles's, and Amontons's laws.

Mathematically, it can be expressed as:

PVT=constant
If you are looking into the changes in the characteristics of a gas in two different conditions, it is
useful to write this equation as:

P1V1T1=P2V2T2

Example
3 moles of nitrogen gas has a pressure of 2.0 atm and volume of 0.50 L at 300 K.

What is the volume of nitrogen gas at STP? The standard temperature and pressure (STP) are
273.15 K and 1.00 atm, respectively.

How can the formula be used?

Step 1: Identify what is asked in the problem.

final volume of the nitrogen gas, V2

Step 2: Write down the given in the problem.

T1 = 300 K
T2 = 273.15 K
P1 = 2.00 atm
P2 = 1.00 atm
V1 = 0.5 L
Step 3: Use the equation to find the unknown quantity.

P1V1T1=P2V2T2
V2=P1V1T2P2T1
V2=(2.00atm)(0.5L)(273.15K)(1.00atm)(300K)
Step 4: Find the answer.

V2=0.91L

Try it!
At STP, the volume of a gas is 2.4 L. At what pressure will it have a volume of 5.0 L if it is heated at
400 K?

Try it! Solution

Step 1: Identify what is asked in the problem.

final pressure of the gas, P2

Step 2: Write down the given in the problem.

T1 = 273.15 K
T2 = 400 K
V1 = 2.4 L
V2 = 5.0 L
P1 = 1.00 atm
Step 3: Use the equation to find the unknown quantity.

P1V1T1=P2V2T2
P2=P1V1T2V2T1
P2=(1.00atm)(2.4L)(400K)(5.0L)(273.15K)
Step 4: Find the answer.

P2=0.70atm

Tips
In solving for unknown quantities, remember to:
 make sure the temperature is in Kelvin;
 check the consistency of units; and
 isolate the unknown quantity on one side of the equation before substituting the given.

What do you think?

How would the plot of temperature vs. pressure-volume look like?

Key Points

Question
According to the combined gas law, what happens to the temperature of a gas when the pressure increases at
constant volume?

Correct answer

It increases.
It decreases.
It remains the same.
The relationship cannot be determined.

Explanation

PVT=constant

Thus, if the pressure increases, the temperature also increases.

Question

According to the combined gas law, what happens to the volume of a gas when the temperature decreases at
constant pressure?

Correct answer

It increases.
It decreases.
It remains the same.
The relationship cannot be determined.

Explanation

PVT=constant

If the temperature is decreased, then the volume decreases too.

Question

According to the combined gas law, what happens to the pressure of a gas when the volume is increased at constant
temperature?

Correct answer

It increases.
It decreases.
It remains the same.
The relationship cannot be determined.

Explanation

Pressure and volume are inversely proportional at constant temperature.

PVT=constant

Thus, when the volume increases, the pressure decreases.

Question

A sample of oxygen occupies a volume of 160 mL at 1 atm and 300 K.

What will be volume of oxygen when the temperature drops to 273 K and the pressure is increased to 2 atm?

Correct answer

72.8 ml
87.9 ml
79.9 ml
87.2 ml

Explanation

P1V1T1=P2V2T2

V2=P1V1T2P2T1

V2=(1.00atm)(0.160L)(273K)(2.00atm)(300K)

V2=72.8ml
