I. COMPETENCIES
Converts measurements from one unit to another in both Metric and English systems.

II. MATERIALS: Reference books, visual aids, laptop

III. TOPIC: Conversion of Length Measurement

Overview:

The Metric System of Measurement is easier to use than the English System
of Measurement since its conversion factors would consistently be in the
decimal system. The base unit for length is the meter and its units longer or
shorter than the meter would be achieved by adding prefixes to the base unit.
These prefixes may also be used for the base units for mass, volume, time and
other measurements.

Prefix Symbol Factor

milli m x 0.001
centi c x 0.01
deci d x 0.1
deka da x 10
hector h x 100
kilo k x 1000

It is also necessary to introduce the use of Metric System Line in converting

metric system measurements. It will provide assistance on what operation to be
use (multiplication or division) depending on the direction of the conversion
process. Each interval uses power of 10.

IV. ACTIVITIES (Strategic Intervention Materials)

A. Guide Card
Converts measurements from one unit to another in Metric System of
Measurements.
Subtasks:
1. Identifying the direction of conversion based on the metric system line
2. Multiplying quantities by powers of 10
3. Dividing quantities by powers of 10
4. Converting Metric System of Measurement

B. Activity Card 1 - LEFT or RIGHT?

I. Based on the metric system below, identify the direction of the conversion process
- LEFT or RIGHT. The first one is done for you.
1. meter to kilometer Answer: RIGHT
2. dekameter to centimeter Answer: _________
3. millimeter to hectometer Answer: _________
4. meter to centimeter Answer: _________
5. decimeter to kilometer Answer: _________

II. Directions: Given the same items above, determine the operation to be use,
MULTIPLICATION or DIVISION. Write MULTIPLY if the drection is LEFT and
DIVIDE is the direction is RIGHT.

1. _______________
2. _______________
3. _______________
4. _______________
5. _______________

Activity Card 2 - MULTIPLY ME!

When multiplying powers of 10, move the decimal point to the right based on the
number of zeroes.
Example:

34.34 x 10 = 343.4 ( 10 has 1 zero thus, move one decimal place to the right)
34.34 x 100 = 3434 ( 100 has 2 zeroes thus, move the two decimal places to the right)

On the other hand, if there is no decimal point on a given quantity, count the number of
zeroes and add it to the given qunatity.
Example:

34 x 10 = 340 (10 has 1 zero thus, add one zero to the answer)
34 x 100 = 3400 (100 has 2 zeroes thus, add two zeroes to the answer)

Directions: Find the product of the following quantities.

1. 0.135 x 100 = 13.5
2. 82.75 x 1000 = ___________
3. 15 x 10000 = ___________
4. 0.003 x 10 = __________
5. 132.58 x 100 = _________

Activity Card 3 - DIVIDE ME!

When dividing powers of 10, move the decimal point to the left based on the number of
zeroes.
Example:

34 ÷ 10 = 3.4 ( 10 has one zero thus, move one decimal place to the left)
3434 ÷ 100 = 34.34 (100 has two zero thus, move tow decimal places to the left)

Directions: Find the quotient of the following quantities.

1. 48.5 ÷ 100 = .485
2. 1879.5 ÷ 1000 = ______
3. 9.356 ÷ 100 = _______
4. 15.92 ÷ 10 = ________
5. 666.98 ÷ 100 = _______
C. ASSESSMENT CARD

Directions: Read and analyze the problem. Choose the letter of the best answer.

4. 0.5 meter when changed to millimeter is equal to what?
A. 5 B. 50 C. 500 D. 5000
5. What is the equivalent of 2.8 decimeters in kilometer?
A. 0.00028 B. 0.0028 C. 280 D. 2800

D. ENRICHMENT CARD

convert it into meter.
Problem 2: Jenny bought 45 dm of lace for her dress. How many meters of lace did she
buy?
Problem 3: Jackie bought 1240 cm of ribbon at Php 1.50 per meter. How much did she
pay for the ribbon?
