The key takeaways are that the lesson discusses Mendelian genetics concepts like phenotype, genotype, dominant and recessive traits.

Phenotype is the observable physical or biochemical characteristics of an organism, such as its appearance, development, biochemical or physiological properties, while genotype is the genetic makeup of an organism.

A dominant trait will be expressed even if there is only one copy of the allele, while a recessive trait requires two copies of the allele to be expressed. The dominant trait masks the expression of the recessive trait if they are present together.

Semi Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 8

Tuesday

A. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners shall be able to:
1. differentiate phenotype and genotype;
2. write the genotype and phenotype of the given characteristics; and
3. identify the dominant and recessive traits for each genetic and phenotypic expression.

B. Subject Matter
Topic: Mendelian Genetics: Phenotype and Genotype
Reference: Grade 8 Science Learner’s Module pp. 329-332
Materials: Visual aids, Power point presentation, activity sheets

C. Preliminary Activities
a. Greetings
The teacher will greet the students.
b. Prayer
A volunteer student will lead the prayer at the front.
c. Energizer
A short dance video clip will be presented by the teacher for students to follow.
d. Checking of attendance
The teacher will ask the group leaders for the absences. This shall be recorded.

D. Lesson Proper
a. Recall
Directions: Briefly answer the questions below.
1. How many daughter cells are produced in meiosis? In mitosis?
2. Daughter cells are identical in which cell division?
3. What type of cells facilitate mitosis? How about meiosis?
4. Does genetic recombination occur in mitosis?
5. How many chromosomes do the resulting daughter cells in mitosis have? In the case
of meiosis?

b. Motivation
Directions: Supply the missing letters to complete the word.
1.
M N T
Hint: The trait that mask another form of the same trait.
2.
H O Y

Hint: Physical appearance/feature

3.
L L E

Hint: One of the pair of genes located at the same position.

I. Activity (Title: Mendelian Genetics: Phenotype and Genotype )

See attached activity sheet.
a. Explaining the activity and presenting the questions to be answered.
b. Discussing the result of the activity.

II. Analysis
1. How will you distinguish a dominant trait from a recessive trait? What
representation shall be observed?
2. How does a homozygous trait differ from a heterozygous one?

III. Application
Give one contrasting trait of your parents. Let M stands for this trait.
1. Which of the two do you inherit that is physically evident?
2. Which trait was masked by another?
3. On the board, write the genotypic expression of this trait.

IV. Abstraction
1. From that standpoint, how does a genotype and phenotype differ from one
another?
2. How about the difference between dominant and recessive trait?

V. Assessment
Directions: Analyze each item below and briefly answer the questions that
follow.
Allele: H- straight hair h- curly hair
1. Write the genotype for heterozygous straight hair.
2. What is the recessive trait?

Allele: R- right handed r- left handed

3. What is the phenotype of Lyle who has rr as his phenotype?
4. What is the dominant trait?

Condition: Aa= heterozygous white

5. What is the genotype in the above condition?
6. How about the phenotype?

Allele: B-black hair b-brown hair

7. What is the dominant trait?
8. What is the recessive trait?
9. Write the genotype for homozygous brown hair?
10. Determine the phenotype of a person whose genotype is Bb.

1. Monohybrid cross
2. Dihybrid cross

 identify the dominant and recessive traits for each phenotypic and genotypic
expression.

B. Activity
Directions: Examine the table below which shows Mendel’s Pea Traits. Afterwards,
