6$)(81,7 is used to control and monitor seal water flow and pressure at
each seal. It is also used to monitor seal condition during operation.
Typical applications are pumps, mixers and other rotating devices used in pro-
cess industry which use WATER as seal liquid.
6$)(81,7 benefits:
• Seal monitoring is reliable and easy.
• Can be connected to process control system of the entire factory.
• No complicated piping connections - no potential leakage points.
• Simplified maintenance and seal installation - no seal water pipelines to be
disassembled.
• Less spare parts required - no couplings or valves required in the storage.

1.10. UP-GRADING
Safeunits have been manufactured for more than 20 years – which amounts to
more than 150 000 Safeunits. Most of them are still in use. Old systems can be
upgraded in the following way:
3. Pressure gauges
• All models (03, 08 and 15) are compatible with the new pressure gauge and
gauge coupling.
4. Electrical alarm
• John Crane 6$)(81,7 can be upgraded only with the new inductive
alarm (AC1 and DC 1).
• Old alarms (types DF-2 and FS-1) are no longer available.

6$)(81,7 can be used only in applications that use WATER as seal liquid.
Hot surfaces may not be near 6$)(81,7, since they may be able to raise
the temperature in 6$)(81,7 over 50 °C (122 °F). Due to danger of freez-
ing, 6$)(81,7 must not be used in temperatures below + 2 °C (36 °F).

There are two types of standard alarms: Both are of double-wire alarms of type
NC (normally closed), when the switch is not activated. Protection class is
Nema 4, IP 67.
If the current and type of electricity are known for certain, model DC-1 is rec-
ommended. Its overload protection prevents possible damages caused by
wrong connections.
Note: Double wire sensors always have some leakage current. Some old proc-
ess control logic systems do not tolerate leakage current at all. In these cases,
use an auxiliary relay or triple wire sensor.

6$)(81,7 MANUAL
Note: pressure fluctuations in seal water line can cause unnecessary alarms. Er-
roneous alarms can be inhibited by e.g. programming a delay into the process
control system in the following way:
Fluctuation in the flow, sensor sends an alarm -> delay 20 seconds - > alarm - >
delay 5 minutes -> device operation, unlocking and process equipment shutdown.
From the safety point of view, the flowmeter display is the most critical component
in 6$)(81,7. Limit values for pressure or temperature must not be exceeded
under any circumstances.
If there is a need to change the flowmeter display, make sure that the screws are
tightened evenly. Tighten the screws only to the tightness that is required for O-
rings to seal the flowmeter display against the base plate.
For models SFP (SFP-C) and SFD (SFD-C), always use FKHFNYDOYHin the water
line going to seal. In cases of a seal damage, it prevents the potentially poisonous
or hot process liquid from entering the flowmeter and seal water piping.

seal water lines.
• Please see section 4, Trouble shooting for seals and seal water system.
8. What causes the alarm to go off?
• An inductive low level switch triggers the alarm when the seal water flow goes
below the set value.
• An inductive sensor recognizes the location of a metal float.
9. Is it possible to connect the alarm to AC (Alternating Current) and/or DC (Direct
Current)?
• AC-1 alarm can be connected to both AC and DC.
• The DC-1 alarm can be connected only to DC.
• Please see section 2.6, Electrical Low Flow Alarm and Adjustment Ranges.

12. What is the purpose of the red needle (memory pin) in the pressure gauge and
the red pointer (memory pin) in the Flowmeter?
• Both serve as memory indicators. You can mark the preset values by these in-
dicators.
• The memory indicators also serve the purpose of monitoring condition.
13. How can I be sure that the check valve has been installed the right way?
• An arrow in the body of the check valve shows the flow direction.
15. Are there any other 6$)(81,7 sizes available than 0-8 l/min and 10 bar?
• Yes, please see section 3, 6$)(81,7 selection table and ordering example.

25. A customer has an old DF-2 or DF-1 sensor and wants to change it. What can
I do?
• Replace the old acryl part with a new one. DF-2 and FS-1 are no longer avail-
able so a new, inductive alarm must also be used.
27. The alarm does not allow leakage flow. What can I do?
• In the case of leakage flow, you need to connect an auxiliary relay or triple wire
sensor.
