ABSTRACT
Dams leak! But only some leaks require investigation and remediation. Finding the pathway
of a leak can be an expensive and slow process, often characterized by drilling “trial and error”
boreholes that further impair the integrity of the structure. An alternative method is to use geo-
physical technologies to identify the location and depth of the seepage path(s) and then repair the
dam where needed. This article discusses a geophysical technology that applies a low voltage,
low amperage electrical current to directly energize the groundwater through an area of interest
using electrodes placed in direct contact with the water. Since groundwater is a better conductor
of electrical current than the surrounding rocks or earthen materials, the electric current follows
the water-bearing features that help to complete the circuit between the two electrodes. This
electric current, just like all electric currents, generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field is
then measured and recorded using sensitive instruments. This geophysical method identifies
the preferential water paths present in an area of investigation and allows dam/mine owners to
better assess the integrity of their structures and, if needed, target their remediation efforts at
the correct location and depth. This method was used at a tailings dam located in Canada. The
results identified two preferential seepage flow paths passing through the dam, and indicated
the remainder of the dam was working as designed.

seepage paths. The yellow lines are
interpretations of seepage paths
between the two electrodes.
The results confirmed that there
were no other seepage paths of any
significance through or under the
dam. This provided confidence that
piping and internal erosion were not
concerns for the dam itself because the
identified seepage paths were in the
foundation materials under the dam
and not in the dam structure itself. So
the geotechnical investigations for pip-
ing potential could be focused on the
foundation materials under the dam
and not on the dam structure itself.
A geotechnical investigation was
completed by drilling into the seep-
age path target areas identified by the
survey. The drilling confirmed the
survey findings. Remedial measures

are now being planned that will be
significantly less costly because the
survey allowed them to be targeted
on the areas of concern.

3. CONCLUSION
A mine in Canada built a tailings dam
downstream of an original active tail-
ings storage facility and upstream of the
open pit. While the dam was being built,
seepage was observed at the toe of the
dam. The mine owners used the MMR
technology to identify preferential seep-
age flow paths under the dam. With this
information, the mine owners were able
to drill the targeted flow paths and con-
firm the MMR results. Remedial meas-

be significantly less expensive because
of the targeted remediation. ■

internationaux.

Overview of the Manicouagan 3 Main Dam –
History of the Board of Consultants
Aperçu du barrage principal de Manicouagan 3 –
Histoire du Comité des experts
Richard Gervais

ABSTRACT
The Manicouagan 3 Project was built by Hydro-Québec between 1971 and 1975. Early references in the technical lit-
erature date back to 1965, but an official Board of Consultants was established by the owner in 1967. This paper covers
information about this board and its members as we near the 45th anniversary of this successful project resting on
difficult foundations.
