Assignment I
Brainstorming (Short revision of the Engineering Hydrology)
 Individual Assignment
 Copy the assignment from the other strictly forbidden, if so the result will be valueless.
 Submission Date on:
1. What is Hydrology in your disciple?
2. A clear lake has a surface area of 708,000m 2. For the month of March (31days), this lake had an
inflow of 1.5m3/s and outflow 2.5 m3/sec. A storage change of +708,000m 3 was recorded. If the total
depth of rainfall recorded at the local rain gage was 225mm for the month, estimate the evaporation
loss from the lake. State any assumption that you make in your calculation.
3. Normal rainfall of 6 rain gauge stations A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and A6 are 122, 98, 72, 116, 135 and 110cms
respectively. During a particular storm station A 2 was inoperative due to some mechanical defect. The
locations of the stations on a map are given in Fig. and bracket terms give the rainfalls. Calculate the
missing rainfall of station A2 by all the methods and compare the results.

4. For the basin shown in the figure, the normal annual rainfall depths recorded and the isohyets are
given. Determine the optimum number of rain-gauge stations to be established in the basin if it is
desired to limit the error in the mean value of rainfall to 10% and the coefficient of variations of the
annual rainfall is 30.12%. Indicate how you are going to distribute the additional rain-gauge stations
required, if any the estimation of the average depth of rainfall over the basin?

I Area=50km2, II Area=62km2, III Area=90km2, IV Area=70km2, V, VI Area=40km2

5. A small catchment of area 150 ha received a rainfall of 10.5 cm in 90 minutes due to a storm. At a the
outlet of the catchment, the stream draining the catchment was dry before the storm and experienced a
runoff lasting for 10 hours with an average discharge value of 2.0 m 3/s. The stream was again dry
after the runoff event.
a) What is the amount of water, which was not available to runoff due to combined effect of
infiltration, evaporation and transpiration?
b) What is the ratio of runoff to precipitation?
