Fig.3-1 Structure diagram of pedestal
To make it clear for the customer, the series number of the antenna has been
marked on the kingpost, the hub, the panels and the struts. The positioning
numbers for the panels corresponding to the long strut and the short strut as well
as the hub are also marked on each part. So there is only one way of connection
between the panels and the struts, the panels and the hub, the struts and the hub.
3.1 Pedestal
An El-over-Az pedestal is used, which consists of the kingpost, triangle mount
and azimuth and elevation drive mechanisms, referring to Fig.3-1. Az. and El.
indication dials provided on the pedestal are used for reference when adjusting
the antenna pointing.
3.1.1 Kingpost
The kingpost is made of seamless steel tube (φ245X8mm). A flange with a
reinforced plate welded on the lower part of the tube is used to connect with
antenna foundation. On each of both up and down ends, an azimuth trunnion is
-5-
provided so as to connect the triangle mount, which is used to support the
antenna. The kingpost mainly bears the weight and overturning moment.
3.1.2 Triangle Mount
The triangle mount is a transition structure which connects the kingpost with the
reflector, it bears and transfers the load of the reflector. The azimuth movement
is realized through rotation of the triangle mount relative to the kingpost, so is
the elevation movement. The triangle mount is mainly made of both channel
steel and steel plate which are welded, as shown in Fig.3-2. On its upper part, 2
support arms are provided to be connected with the hub through the pivoted
trunnion, so that the antenna is moved up and down. Both up and down
trunnions on the side of the triangle mount are connected with the up and down
trunnions of the kingpost, which is taken as Az. axis of the antenna. When the
antenna does azimuth movement, the triangle mount is rotated with the antenna.
Note:
For convenience, the kingpost has been connected with the triangle mount as a
whole before shipment.
3.1.3 Azimuth and Elevation Drive Mechanism
Azimuth and elevation drive mechanisms adopt a trapezoid thread drive mode,
which has the advantages of heavy load bearing capability and steady operation
etc., so T50×8 trapezoid spiral jackscrew is chosen through calculation.
The azimuith drive mechanism is assembled on the trunion of the kingpost and
the triangle mount. Drive the jackscrew CW or CCW by turning the nut on the
azimuth jackscrew, the antenna can rotate around azimuth axis. The continuous
adjustment can be made within a range of ±60°. Fix the antenna with lock nuts
after adjustment.
The elevation drive mechanism is assembled on the lower part of the hub and
connected with the hub and triangle mount, which is used to support the antenna.
Turn the nut on the elevation jackscrew to drive it moving up or down along the
axis direction, a continuous adjustment over a range of 5°--90° can be realised.
Fix the antenna with lock nuts after adjustment.

Fig.3-2 Triangle mount
3.2 Antenna Reflector
The reflector consists of a hub, 16 individual panels, and 16 backup support
struts, as shown in Fig.3-3. The antenna is a complete structure system on which
16 panels are circumferentially connected by bolts and then connected with the
hub and backup support struts. The structure is so designed that the rigidity and
strength as well as high accuracy of surface can be obtained.
-7-
3.2.1 Hub
The hub is a welded cylinder (920X700mm) made of steel. It is not only the
main load-bearing part of antenna reflector, but also the part connecting with the
pedestal and feed system. The flange provided on the upper part of the hub, is
not only used for installing the feed system. but also used as a reference surface
for installing and measuring the accuracy of the reflector. An available space
provided in the inner cavity of the hub is used for installing the feed system and
RF outdoor unit. The lower flange of the hub is used for connecting with the
pedestal and installing the rear cover. Close the cover after installing the electric
equipment so as to seal the cavity.
3.2.2 Individual Panel
The panels are the critical parts of the reflector, they are the parts to which the
ribs and envelopes are stretch-formed and riveted on the precise mould. The
envelop is the rust-proof aluminium plate with 2mm in thickness and on its back,
there are 2 longitudinal ribs and 4 rings ribs which are all made of rust-proof
L-shape aluminium (50x30x3mm). Such a structure has the characteristics of
higher accuracy and strong rigidity after individual panels are stretch-formed.
3.2.3 Backup Support Struts
There are 16 sets of support struts, each of which consists of long and short
support struts made of 63x40x5mm L steel. One end of the support strut is
connected with the hub and the other one is connected with the panel, which
provides a stable support structure for the reflector so that the antenna can safely
and reliably operate under the required environment.
3.3 Feed System
The feed system of 4.5m antenna consists of the corrugated horn, the microwave
network, the subreflector and the support frame. For convenience of installation,
the subreflector is supported on the feed directly. There is no need to install and
adjust the subreflector because the dimension of the subreflector relative to the
horn is accurate before shipment. The subreflector is supported on the horn by
four small metal struts distributed in 45 degrees as shown in Fig.8-1. The linear
polarization feed consists of the horn, three straight circular waveguides,
two-port network with a filter. The circular polarization feed consists of the
horn, the polarizer and two-port network with a filter and a transmit OMT.

plates and other necessary tools same as that used by a crane.
5.2 Block Diagram of Installation Procedure
The installation procedures are given in Fig.5-1.
Prior to installation, check whether the packing cases are damaged or not. Open
each case and check the packed parts according to the packing list. After that,
assemble the parts step by step.
5.4 Caution for Installation
a. Make sure that the parts for installation are the same series number of the
antenna.
b. All the spare parts must be protected carefully in order to keep them from
damage.
-10-
c. When installing the feed system, be careful to protect the horn cover against
scuffing and entering water. Replace it if damaged.
d. When entering the reflector for installation, the personnel should wear soft
bottom shoes and stand on the places under which there are backup support
struts and ribs of the panels. Lay some liners such as soft foam and kraft paper
in order to avoid deformation of the panels and damage on their surface.
E. If any pin is found to enter any hole of the shafts not easily, clean the hole as
well as the pin with sand paper 80#.
-11-
Azimuth drive mechanism and its installation are shown in Fig.6-2. Clear the
azimuth jackscrew first and coat the lubricating grease on it, then install the
pendulum block and the adjusting nuts of both sides on the jackscrew.
-12-
7.0 Installation of Reflector
There are two hoist methods for installation of reflector. One is on the ground
and the other is on the pedestal when the crane is not available. The former is
used under the condition of the crane. The assembly parts are shown in Fig.7-1.
-13-
hub on the marked position in a direction. And then, connect the short strut one
by one with the hub and the long strut on the marked position in the same
direction, referring to Fig.7-2. Finally, fasten all the screws from the inner to the
outer step by step.
c). Find out the position of the panel, corresponding to the hub by the marked
numbers on each panel and the hub respectively. According to the marked
number, assemble the panel carefully as shown in Fig.7-3. While assembling,
insert each panel into the upper flange of the hub until the small edge of the
panel touches the flange tightly. Along the longitudinal rib of each panel, there
are four holes for connection. Refer to Fig.7-3, insert M8x30 bolts
consequently.
d). After all panels are connected with the hub and struts, all the screws should
be fastened from the inner to the outer. When fastening the screws, it must be
noted that all screws are fastened on the first row in CW, the next row in CCW,
and so forth. At the same time, keep the upper surface even on the adjacent
panels.
AFTER ASSEMBLING IS COMPLETE, MAKE MEASUREMENT TO
-14-
ENSURE THE ERROR OF APERTURE DIMENSION IS LESS THAN ±2MM
IN EACH DIRECTION. Because the small deformation of the panels may
during package, shipment and assembling, the diameter of the 4.5m antenna is
not 4572mm±2mm. If it is found that the diameter is not 4572mm±2mm,
adjustment of the antenna aperture should be done. First, determine the position
of the panels to be adjusted referring to the measured data of the antenna
diameter and loosen the connecting screws. For the position of the data large
than 4572mm±2mm, push the panels upwards slowly and measure the diameter.
If the errors are less than 2mm, tighten the screws. For the position of the data
less than 4572mm±2mm, pull the panels downwards slowly and measure the
diameter. If the errors are less than 2mm, tighten the screws. And then, measure
the diameter of the antenna again and repeat the adjustment for several times
until the errors of the 4.5m antenna diameter are within ±2mm in all directions.
e). Hoist the reflector and connect it with the pedestal after all the hard wares
-15-
are tightened. The hoist method is shown in Fig.7-4.
7.2 Installation on the Pedestal
Installation procedures of manual hoist are as follows:
a. Build a triangle frame on the foundation of pedestal according to Fig.7-5. The
height of the support point from the ground is 4.8m. Hang a manual chain hoist
(load >500kg) with steel wires.
b. Put four M10 hoisting rings into 4 thread holes of upper flange which are
distributed uniformly along the circumference and put the steel wire through
them, then hoist it to the pedestal. Connect the hub with two trunnions of the
pedestal and the elevation drive mechanism with elevation trunnion on the side
of the hub. Adjust the flange surface of the hub to a horizontal position.
-16-
Fig.7-5 Hoist and assembly diagram of reflector
c. Remove the manual hoist equipment after the hub is installed.
d. A firm and safe platform with a diameter more than 5000mm is built around
the hub (The height of platform is the same with that of the down flange of the
hub). Around the platform, there should be a safe fence more than 0.8m in
height, as shown in Fig.7-6.
-17-
e. Install the support struts and individual panel according to the same steps
described in Paragraph 7.1.
f. Remove the platform after the panels and the feed system is installed.
-18-
Fig.8-1(B) Connection of subreflector/horn assembly
e. Hoist and install the feed system on the main reflector, referring to Fig.8-2.
-19-
c. Check the position of the subreflector referring to the dimension between the
subreflector and the horn aperture surface (Fig.8-1). For example, check the
axial dimension of the subreflector relative to horn and check whether the
subrefelctor is co-axial to the horn axis. Adjust the axial direction using M5x15
bolts on the subreflector supports and adjust the vertical deviation using M6x30
bolts, then fix the bolts after adjustment.
d. Determine the feed polarization in the required state referring to Fig.8-3. The
phase shift (90°) is realized done by way of the dielectric sheet and the pins. If
the polarization state is incorrect, loose the M6 bolts of the flange A in
Fig.8-1(B), rotate the network by 90 degrees and then connect the flange by
inserting the provided positioning pin. Finally fasten the bolts.
-20-
the antenna in the optimal state according to the requirement of its electrical
performance.
a. Caculation formula of both El and Az angles of the antenna are as follows:
Az = 180° + sin(sin ∆λ 1 − cos 2 ∆λ cos 2 φ

9.2 Maintenance
9.2.1 Maintenance of the HardWares
It is important to pay much attention to the check and maintenance of the hard
wares, for the 4.5m antenna system composed of several large parts is
assembled together by a lot of bolts. The connection of the bolts will have an
effect on performance of the antenna system even on its service life. Check the
hard wares of connection parts regularly, especially after they are vibrated by
the strong wind. If loosened, fasten them in time; If damaged, replace them with
the same type in time.
9.2.2 Maintenance of the Feed System
Check regularly whether the horn cover is damaged. If it is broken, replace it in
time in order to prevent the feed system against water. If water has already
entered the feed system, the system performance may have degraded. A method
is recommended to remove water in the feed. First, loose the screws connecting
the LNA with the filter, the adapter on the transmit port. Check if water has
existed in the LNA and the adapter or not. If water is found, clean it with a clear
cloth carefully. Then removing the marked transmit OMT or the flange A
referring to Fig.8-1, blow away water or moisture inside the horn and the OMT
using a blower. Finally, referring to the line marked on the flange, connect the
disassembling parts one by one and fasten the screws tightly, replace the
damaged radome for a new one.
9.2.3 Surface Coating
The components or parts exposed in the air should be coated for protection.
Both Zinc yellow priming paint and surface paint are protectively coated after
the chemical process is used for all aluminium parts. Zinc-plating is used for all
the small steel parts. A process method is adopted for the large steel-parts: i.e.
first heats galvanising, then priming paint and finally surfaces paint. Because
the coating is not only for decoration, but also for the metal ability of rust proof
under the natural environment and the service life of antenna. If the coating was
damaged, coat the white diffusive paint in time.
