GUIDELINE FOR
REUSABLE PARTS
AND SALVAGE
OPERATIONS
Reuse of Cylinder Heads on C-9 Engines
with Injector Tip Damage

Introduction
This guideline enables dealers and their customers to benefit from cost reductions
made possible through an established parts reusability and salvage program. Every
effort has been made to provide the most current and relevant information known to
Caterpillar Inc. Since the Company makes ongoing changes and improvements to its
products, this guideline must be used with the latest technical information available from
Caterpillar to ensure such changes and improvements are incorporated where
applicable.
For questions or additional information concerning this guideline, contact Caterpillar
Service Support Division, Dealer Support (309) 636-5833.

Summary
This guideline provides photos to help reduce the scrap rate of reworked cylinder heads
and to thus increase profitability without decreasing quality. The photos in this guideline
show heads that were damaged by broken injector tips. Many of the heads that may
have been scrapped in the past can now be reused by comparing the actual damage on
the head to the photos in this guideline.

This new procedure for evaluating head damage from injector tip breakage only applies
to C-9 Engines at this time. When used in the same application, cylinder heads that
meet the "Use again" specifications in this guideline can be expected to give normal
performance until the next overhaul.

Never install a cylinder head that this guideline shows cannot be used again. During
reconditioning, correct any conditions that might have caused the original failure.

Inspection
All of the heads shown in the photos have been milled to near minimum thickness to
remove as much damage as possible. The damage that remains is inside the gasket
sealing area. This area is shown by the black circle drawn on the head.

Heads with damage in the fire ring seat area after machining should not be used again.

Identification Stamp
-and Nomenclature
Cylinder heads that are reworked by Caterpillar dealers using the criteria in this
guideline should be stamped with a dealer-selected stamp in area (1) shown in
Illustration 1. This stamp will identify the cylinder heads as having injector tip damage
and not casting porosity. Caterpillar Reman ® heads will be stamped with a 6 mm (0.25
inch) upper case "M".
