Design of Flocculation Tank.

Question: A water treatment plant is being designed to process 50,000 m^3/d of water. Jar testing and pilot plant analysis
indicate that an alum dosage of 40 mg/L with flocculation at a Gt value of 4x10^4 produces optimal results at the expected
water temperatures of 15 degrees celcius. Determine the monthly alum requirement?

Note: Please show step by steo calculations and solution. Thank you.

Given Data

Capacity of Treatment plant to Treat water : 50,000 m3/day

Alum dosage : 40 mg/l

Solution

Calculation of Alum Requirement (Monthly)

Convert Alum dosage in kg/m3

1 mg/l = 10 -3 kg/m3

So 40 mg/l = 0.04 kg/m3

hence Alum Dosage is 0.04 kg/m3

Capacity of Treatment Plant to treat water in 1 Month

= Capacity of Treatment Plant per day * 30

= 50,000 x 30 = 1,500,000 m3/Month

Alum Required : Alum Dosage x Water Treated per Month

= 0.04 x 1,500,000

= 60,000 kg/Month

Hence Amount of Alum required per month is 60,000 Kg.
