Historical Perspectives of Career Planning
 Career- comes from French word “ carriere” which means a road or a race course
- turn comes from the Latin word “ cararia” which refers to track for wheeled vehicles
 Career choice was almost non existent. Before, there was no need to plan and make a decision
about one’s career

1950s to 1960s
 In the Philippines, parents hope their children to become professionals. Regardless of
the socio-economic statues, parents wanted their children to earn a degree.
 Engaging in careers served as means for self- expression, satisfaction of personal
interests, or the development of talents. Being a teacher was highly regarded in the
community
 Education began to lose its stature as course especially in Manila
 The course was perceived to be taken by those who did not qualify in other courses.
1970s
 The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) was introduced in
order to distinguish those who were eligible to take a degree course from
those who should take a vocational- technical course
1990s
 During the early 1990s, education, nursing and secretarial courses were
associated with women. When men enrolled in these courses during this
period, their sexual orientation was a bit in question.
 New courses like computer science, computer technology, management
information system, computer programming and web- designing have
started to gain popularity.
 The parents obliged their children to take up courses that would provide
them jobs. Courses like nursing and special education became popular
during this period
Significant definitions in career field
 Career- it is the time devoted for working out of a purposeful
life pattern through the work undertaken by an individual
 Work- activity that produces of value for oneself or others
 Vocation- work that an individual does because of a calling
 Profession- a career that requires specialized training and
academic preparation
 Occupation- group of similar positions found in different
industries or organizations
 Position- group of tasks performed by an individual in an
organization
 Job- paid position held by one or more individuals requiring
some related attributes in a specific organization
What is Career Planning?
 Career planning encompasses establishing career objectives and determining appropriate
educational and developmental programs to enhance and enrich the knowledge, skills
and attitudes required to achieve short- or long- term career objectives
The career planning is comprised of four steps
1. Self -Gather information about yourself (self assessment)
 Interest, values, roles, skills/aptitudes, preferred environments, developmental needs, your
realities
2. Options
 Explore the occupations in which you are interested
 Get more specific information after you narrow down your options
3. Match – During this phase of the process you will:
 Identify possible occupations
 Choose both a short term and a long term option
4. Action - You will develop the steps you need to take in order to reach your goal, for
example :
 Investigating sources of additional training and education, if needed
 Developing a job search strategy
 Writing your resume
 Preparing for job interviews

Significance of Career planning


 career planning is not just making plans to obtain your “ perfect” job or career, but to
help you make the many adjustments there will be along the way
 Knowing yourself
 Exploring your options
 Making decisions
 Moving on

Career Ladder of a Teacher
Different stages of the career ladder or path
of a teacher
 Cadet- a college student, a prospective teacher, or a student teacher
 Rookie- a degree holder who has passed the Licensure Examination for
Teachers(LET) and a certified teacher by the Professional Regulation
Commission
 Young professional- it has at least two to three years of teaching
experience and is to be expected enrolled in a graduate program in
education
 Full-fledged professional- they are already achieved competence in the
career- a master’s degree holder
 Mentor/molder- they are the one who taught at least five years in any
educational level
 Artist- a professional teacher who has been in the teaching profession for
at least ten years, and has earned the highest degree possible which is a
doctorate degree
Some tips in preparing resume

 Create a positive first impression


showcasing your communication skills and making the resume easy to
read
 Describe what you have learned
Highlight the courses and projects that are applicable for the job you
hope to be hired for
 List your accomplishments
Highlight any special accomplishments you have achieved
 Getting ready for your job interview
practice answering interview questions and practice your responses to
the typical job interview questions and answers most employers ask
