Before, there was no need to plan and make a decision about one’s career Tabular of History of career planning 1950s to 1960s In the Philippines, parents hope their children to become professionals. Regardless of the socio-economic statues, parents wanted their children to earn a degree. Engaging in careers served as means for self- expression, satisfaction of personal interests, or the development of talents. Being a teacher was highly regarded in the community Education began to lose its stature as course especially in Manila The course was perceived to be taken by those who did not qualify in other courses. 1970s The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) was introduced in order to distinguish those who were eligible to take a degree course from those who should take a vocational- technical course 1990s During the early 1990s, education, nursing and secretarial courses were associated with women. When men enrolled in these courses during this period, their sexual orientation was a bit in question. New courses like computer science, computer technology, management information system, computer programming and web- designing have started to gain popularity. The parents obliged their children to take up courses that would provide them jobs. Courses like nursing and special education became popular during this period Significant definitions in career field Career- it is the time devoted for working out of a purposeful life pattern through the work undertaken by an individual Work- activity that produces of value for oneself or others Vocation- work that an individual does because of a calling Profession- a career that requires specialized training and academic preparation Occupation- group of similar positions found in different industries or organizations Position- group of tasks performed by an individual in an organization Job- paid position held by one or more individuals requiring some related attributes in a specific organization What is Career Planning? Career planning encompasses establishing career objectives and determining appropriate educational and developmental programs to enhance and enrich the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to achieve short- or long- term career objectives The career planning is comprised of four steps 1. Self -Gather information about yourself (self assessment) Interest, values, roles, skills/aptitudes, preferred environments, developmental needs, your realities 2. Options Explore the occupations in which you are interested Get more specific information after you narrow down your options 3. Match – During this phase of the process you will: Identify possible occupations Choose both a short term and a long term option 4. Action - You will develop the steps you need to take in order to reach your goal, for example : Investigating sources of additional training and education, if needed Developing a job search strategy Writing your resume Preparing for job interviews

Specific (well- defined and detailed) Measurable (can evaluate progress) Attainable (within reach) Realistic (practical) Time- bound (set of time) Career Ladder of a Teacher Different stages of the career ladder or path of a teacher Cadet- a college student, a prospective teacher, or a student teacher Rookie- a degree holder who has passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers(LET) and a certified teacher by the Professional Regulation Commission Young professional- it has at least two to three years of teaching experience and is to be expected enrolled in a graduate program in education Full-fledged professional- they are already achieved competence in the career- a master’s degree holder Mentor/molder- they are the one who taught at least five years in any educational level Artist- a professional teacher who has been in the teaching profession for at least ten years, and has earned the highest degree possible which is a doctorate degree Some tips in preparing resume
