SUSTAINABLE SHELTER & HEALTHY INDOOR

CLIMATE

THE ACCOMMODATION FOR THE GIRAFFE IS AUTUMN OR WINTER DAY, THE ANIMALS ARE ABLE TO STAND AT THE NORTH SIDE
DESIGNED AS A "SHELTER", OF WITCH THE OUTSIDE THE BUILDING AND IN THE SUN. ON COLD AND CLOUDY DAYS IS USUALLY

SERVED AS THE MODEL. THE DESIGN THIS IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE GIRAFFES CAN FIND THE NECESSARY WARMTH AD SO
PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE PLACE FOR THE
CALLED "CUDDLE-WALLS”. THE HEAT THAT IS REQUIRED FOR THESE "CUDDLE-WALLS” ARE THE SAVANNAH HOUSE, WITH ITS SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS, IS COMFORTABLE FOR THE
WOODCHIPS BURNED IN STEAD OF FOSSIL FUELS. ANIMALS, USER-FRIENDLY AND ENERGY EFFICIENT/EFFECTIVE. SUSTAINABILITY IS NOT
ONLY REFLECTED IN THE ENERGETIC CONCEPT OF THE DESIGN BUT ALSO IN, PLAN AND
MATERIALS INCLUDING UNTREATED WOOD WITH FSC-LABEL AND GRASSES AS REED AND
NATURAL VENTILATION ALSO CONTRIBUTES PRESSED BAMBOO. BY CAREFULLY SELECTING AND APPLYING THE RIGHT MATERIALS THE
TO THE PLEASANT ATMOSPHERE. THIS IS BUILDING IS NEARLY FREE OF MAINTENANCE, CONVENIENT FOR OPERATING COSTS, BUT
POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE BUILDING AND THE ALSO FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. LESS MAINTENANCE MEANS EVEN LESS ANNOYANCE
VENTILATION ARE ORIENTED AT THE MOST FOR THE ANIMALS, THE PUBLIC AND LESS ENVIRONMENTAL HARASSMENT.
COMMON WIND DIRECTION. THE PRINCIPLE OF
NEGATIVE AIR PRESSURE PULLS THE WIND
TROUGH THE BUILDING.

THE ANNUALLY RAINFALL OF APPROXIMATELY

330,000 LITRES, ON THE ROOF OF THE
SAVANNAH HOUSE WILL BE COLLECTED AND
USED FOR THE THIRSTY PLANTS IN THE
ADJACENT BUILDING.

ANIMAL WELFARE
THE FLOOR PLAN IS WITHOUT CORNERS, TO PROVIDE A RELAXED AND NATURAL
BEHAVIOUR OF THE ANIMALS. IN THIS
WAY, THEY ARE NOT ABLE CLAMP EACH
OTHER AT A CORNER, THE ANIMALS
CAN ALWAYS TURN THEIR BACK ON A
APPROACHING CONFLICT AN RUN
AWAY. THE 'BULGING' OF THE FACADE
GIVES THE ANIMALS MORE FREEDOM.

THE BUILDING FACES INWARDS IN ORDER TO REDUCE EXCESSIVE NOISE LEVELS (BARKING!)
FOR THE NEIGHBOURS. IN THE HIGH PART OF THE BUILDING, THE CAT
THE TWO AMSTERDAM ACCOMMODATION IS LOCATED ABOVE THE DOG KENNELS AS AN EXTRA SOUND

SKY-FRAME

THE "COMB MODEL" USUAL FOR THIS FUNCTION CONSISTS OF A LONG SERVICE
CORRIDOR, WITH A REPETITION OF KENNELS AT RIGHT ANGLES TO IT, SEPARATED BY
SMALL OUTSIDE SPACES. THIS MODEL IS DOMINATED BY RAILINGS AND THE LOOK OF IT
CLOSELY RESEMBLES A PRISON.

THE CENTRAL POSITION OF THE ENTRANCE LOBBY DETERMINES THE FINAL FORM - A
FLUID OBJECT. ITS HIDE IS A PIXEL VERSION OF THE GRASS ON THE OLD DIKE NEXT TO THE
LOCATION.

WE HAVE HAD THE SERVICE CORRIDOR AND THE KENNEL CORRIDOR CONVERGE IN THE
AMSTERDAM ANIMAL RESCUE CENTRE. THIS CREATES A LONG, THIN RIBBON BUILDING.
THIS BUILDING IS FOLDED LIKE A RIBBON ALONG THE WATERWAY AROUND THE PLOT.
INSIDE THIS, TWO LARGE PLAY SPACES FOR THE ANIMALS HAVE BEEN CREATED.

THE USE OF GABION IS A LINK BETWEEN THE IDEA OF PROTECTION AND THE CONCEPT
OF LANDSCAPE: USED AS CLADDING, IT DEVELOPS THE POETICS OF THE OCCUPIED WALL
(CITADEL, FORTRESS, ENCLOSURE ...) BY MEANS OF A CONSTRUCTIVE TECHNIQUE
(NATURAL STONE ARRANGED BY HAND IN METAL CAGES) TYPICAL OF CONSTRUCTIONS
ALONG RIVERS OR PROTECTING MOUNTAIN ROADS.
THE PROGRAM INCLUDES THREE SEPARATE UNITS. THE FIRST IS DEVOTED TO THE A METAL ROOF STRUCTURES THE SITE AND CONNECTS THE ADMINISTRATIVE PART TO
ADMINISTRATION, INCLUDING OFFICES, MEETING ROOM, REPORT WRITING ROOM, THE LOGISTIC ONE WHILE CLEARING A SHELTERED SPACE UNDER A CANOPY TO PROTECT
LOCKER ROOMS AND TOILETS. DELIVERIES, LOADING AND UNLOADING OF DOGS FOR PATROLS DEPARTURES AND
RETURNS.

THE SECOND COMBINES THE FUNCTIONS RELATED TO THE DOGS CARE, SUCH AS
NURSING, FOOD PREPARATION AREA, ATTACK MAN LOCAL, STORAGE EQUIPMENT.

THE THIRD IS DEVOTED TO DOGS SHELTERS WHICH ARE DISPATCHED INTO THREE ZONES:
THE ATTACK DOGS, THE SNIFFER DOGS, AND THE QUARANTINE BOXES. EACH NICHE IS
COMPOSED OF A FRONT AREA SHELTERED BY A ROOF AND AN OPEN AIR BACK
COURTYARD.
