Nurturing a Growth Mindset

A How to Guide for Parents

Developing the right mindset early on is

crucial for a successful, happy life.
- Rebecca Louick

What is a Growth
Mindset?
It is the belief that our intelligence and abilities can improve with effort and
perseverance. Those with a growth mindset are open to learning new strategies, willing
to take risks and confront challenges, view failure as a learning opportunity, and
generally more confident and resilient.

1. Model It 2. Praise It
- Share when you're feeling Praise EFFORT, not intelligence.
   discouraged and brainstorm
solutions out loud  Say: I can see you worked really
- Discuss positive Feelings & how     hard on this.
perseverance helped you get there NOT You're so smart.
- Discuss negative feelings and
calming strategies Say:Maybe it's time to try
- Set and share personal goals another strategy.
- Use the Power of YET: NOT:It's okay. Maybe you're just
Turn I can't... statements  not cut out for this.
   into  I can't...YET!

3. Accept Mistakes as
Learning Opportunities
- Start by sharing your mistakes and what you learned from them to
normalize the idea that mistakes are okay
- Explain that taking risks and making mistakes is part of the learning
  Process.
- Encourage productive struggle. Give your child time to think things
through before "Saving" them. Try brainstorming solutions with them
rather than giving them the answer.
- Don't accept failure as an excuse to give up
