Stage 1: Desired Results

General
Learning 1. Develop Number Sense
Outcome(s)
Specific
Learning 1. Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of integers, concretely, pictorially and symbolically
Outcome(s)
Students will:
● Use estimation strategies to develop a conjecture about a problem
Learning ● Use visualization and proportional reasoning to develop a conjecture about parts of a whole
Objectives ● Use integer addition to add integers far from 0
● Choose their own strategy to add integers
● Articulate number sentences that make a + or a - result

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

● Textbook questions
Summative Formative ● Small group assessment during work time
● N/A ● Whiteboards - adding integers and which type of operations make a + or a -

result.

Stage 3: Learning Experience

● 6.3/6.4 Worksheet
● Whiteboards
Tech to Do ● Document Camera Resources to Bring ● Whiteboard markers
● Textbook
Time Content/Description Notes
Prior to
● load number talk
10:45 am
Warm Up
10:45 am ● Number talk
15 minutes ● Estimation
● Fractions
Teach Lesson 3: Adding Integers Far from 0
● Partner whiteboards
o (+23) + (-18) = ?
o Explain how you did it
o Show 2 different situations where adding 2 integers is a positive. Show 2
different situations where adding 2 integers can be a negative.
11:00 am ● We can use counters, zero principle and number lines, or find the difference between
20 minutes the 2 and decide if it should be positive or negative.
o How does taking the difference between the 2 integers use the 0 principle?
● Review how to use number lines with arrows for integer addition.
o start at 0
o add the next arrow to the tip of the first one and wherever it ends is the
result.

11:20 am Work Time
35 minutes ● 6.3 and 6.4 worksheet
● Textbook questions
o Pg 250 #2, 3, 6, 7
o Pg 256 #3, 4, 5, 7, 8
▪ show an example of #3 on the board ahead of time so they know
what they are supposed to do
o Before letting students work, read through some of the textbook problems as
a class with the document camera so they understand what they are

supposed to be doing.
● Work with students in small groups. Rather than instruction time in small groups, try
having instruction as a whole class and small group work stations.
Number Line Closure
● Split students into 2 groups
● Each student will receive a slip with a number sentence (adding integers)
11:55 am
● They will decide what integer their number sentence represents
10 minutes
● They will decide what side of the number lines the negatives should be on and decide
where they need to stand.
