STORYTELLING SYLLABUS

Unlike the ordinary syllabus you might find in school where everything is written out
and assigned for you, this syllabus is meant to help you create your own Truffaut-like
agenda by determining your own goals and weekly schedules.

1. Use this first page to determine what medium you will focus most on. This usually is
the medium people are most familiar with but you can have two major focuses if you’d
like. The secondary focus area is ideally for something you are less familiar with.

2. Create your weekly schedule. This should be something you strive for every week, and
unlike a class syllabus which lists a definite ending period, this should be something you
believe you can do every single week even during writing periods.

3. Fill in the checklist areas with things you want to read, watch, play, etc. Check them
off as you go along.

4. Log all completed work and what medium they are in to map out your storytelling
patterns and look for places later where you lack storytelling background.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE
Truffaut’s schedule was to read three books a week and watch three films a day. For the
average person, I find that quite ambitious, though I know some who watch eight movies a
week or one book.

Because this is self-generated,the way you fill this out is up to you. Maybe you have days that
are dedicated just to book reading and you mark those as such. Or maybe it’s summertime
so you write in each box how many movies you want to watch per day. Don’t beat yourself
up if you can’t get to it everyday - we’re all busy. The focus of this syllabus is not to pressure
yourself into consuming stories so it feels like homework, but to cultivate a habit the same
way you would cultivate one for writing.
