Tutorial #3
Free and Forced Vibration of 1DOF system

1. Determine the natural frequency of angular oscillations of a simple pendulum as shown in the following figure.
Assumption is the mass of the rod, 𝑚𝑟 is negligible

2. Obtain the differential equation of motion of the system using the energy method.

3. A torsional vibration system as shown in below Figure in which a disk having a mass moment of inertia about its
axis 𝐼𝐺 is fastened to shafts of different diameters d1, and d2 and fixed at both ends. Obtain:
(a) the differential equation of angular motion (b) the natural frequency of angular vibration.

4. Given figure shows U-tube manometer used for measuring gas or liquid pressure. The cross sectional area of the

manometer is 𝐴, the total length of the column of liquid is 𝑙, and the density of the liquid or gas is 𝝆. The viscosity of

the liquid or gas is negligible. Obtain (a) The governing differential equation of motion (b) The period of oscillation
5. A mass of 1 kg is suspended by a spring having a stiffness of 500 N/m. The mass is displaced downward from its
static equilibrium position through a distance of 0.01 m. Determine the following: (a) the differential equation of
motion of the system (b) the natural frequency of the system (c) the response of the system as a function of time (d)
the total energy of the system.
6. The ratio of successive amplitudes of a viscously damped single-degree-of-freedom system is found to be 20 to 1.
Determine the ratio of successive amplitudes if the amount of damping is (a) doubled (b) halved.
7. A spring mass system with viscous damping is displaced from the equilibrium position and released. If the amplitude
diminished by 10% each cycle, what fraction of the critical damping does the system have?
8. For a SDOF spring mass system, m = 20 kg, k = 8000 N/m, F0 = 80N, and ω = 20 rad/s. The initial conditions are 𝑥0

= 0.02 m and 𝑥0̇ = 0. Obtain the displacement of the mass at t = 0.5 s and t = 1s.

9. A single-degree-of-freedom damped system has a mass of 50 kg, a damping ratio of 0.10, natural frequency of 10
rad/sec and is subjected to a harmonic excitation of amplitude 2500 N and frequency of 150 rad/sec. Determine the
steady-state amplitude and phase angle of the response.
10. A machine part having a mass of 2.5kg vibrates in a viscous medium. A harmonic exciting force of 30N acts on the
part and causes resonant amplitude of 14 mm with a period of 0.22s. Find the damping coefficient. If the frequency
of the exciting force is changed to 4 Hz, also determine the increase in the amplitude of the forced vibration upon the
removal of the damper.
11. A weight attached to a spring of stiffness 530 N/m and undergoes viscous damping and the weight was displaced and
released as shown in Fig. 1. The period of vibration was found to be 1.8 seconds. The ratio of consecutive
amplitudes was found to be 4.2/1. Determine the amplitude and phase angle when a force of 200 cos 3t acts on the
system.

12. Suppose the 1 DOF system above (with the stiffness and damper supporting it from below), is excited by its base
displacement as 𝑦(𝑡) = 𝑌𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜔𝑡). MATLAB: Plot the base motion and body response due to the support motion as
a times series (on the same plot). Here, tuning factor = 0.5, 1, 1.5. Amplitude 𝑌 = 10𝑛 , −2 < 𝑛 (𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑟) < 2.

𝑚
13. In the 1DOF system, let the mass have a rotating unbalance mass 𝑚𝑢 = , 𝑝 = 10𝑛 , −5 < 𝑛(𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑟) < 0.The
𝑝

eccentricity of this mass from the rotating centre is 𝑒 = 0.1, 0.5, 1. The rotating unbalance causes unbalanced vertical
forces, which causes the 1-DOF system to oscillate. MATLAB: Plot the response time-series at tuning factor = 0.5,
1, 1.5. How much force is transmitted to the base?
