INSTRUCTIONS: Read and answer the questions as accurately and honestly as you can.
1. Give two scientific and technological developments and explain how these created a large impact
on your everyday life. (10 points)
The Internet is a global wide area network that connects computer systems across the world. It
includes several high-bandwidth data lines that comprise the Internet "backbone." These lines are
connected to major Internet hubs that distribute data to other locations, such as web servers and
ISPs. Internet is the world’s largest and most unruly library, it’s also a global news channel, social club,
research archive, shopping service, town hall, and multimedia kiosk. The internet was the work of
dozens of pioneering scientists, programmers and engineers who each developed new features and
technologies that eventually merged to become the “information superhighway” we know today.
Internet really created a large impact in our everyday life and that invention make our lives easier
because through internet we can communicate faster to our family, relatives, friends, and loved ones.
People can keep their friends and family updated on their daily life routines. They do this by putting
up their statuses or uploading their pictures on social media platforms. People can express their ideas
and thoughts on different on-going activities in the world. They can be political, educational or related
to entertainment. But also because of internet some people dedicate most of their time browsing the
net. Though internet really created large impact to our lives it still has disadvantages that affect the
behaviour of people.
Organ transplant also created a large impact in our lives. Organ transplantation is a medical
procedure in which an organ is removed from one body and placed in the body of a recipient, to
replace a damaged or missing organ. An organ transplant is a surgical operation in which a failing or
damaged organ in the human body is removed and replaced with a functioning one. The donated
organ may be from a deceased donor, a living donor, or an animal. In some cases an artificial organ is
used. Donation is the giving of an organ and tissue to help someone that needs a transplant.
Transplants can save or transform the life of a person. One organ and tissue donor can help transform
the lives of more than 10 people. This relies on donors and their families agreeing to donate their
organ and tissue after death. Organ donation has been shown in studies to provide enormous benefit
to grieving families and obviously it provides an incredible benefit to the organ recipients. For every
donor, there's the opportunity to give life to a heart recipient, two lung recipients, two kidney
recipients and a liver recipient, as well as multiple potential recipients for tissue and eyes. One of the
advantage of organ transplant is it improves others’ quality of life. For some, an organ transplant
means no longer having to be dependent on costly routine treatments to survive. For others, an eye
or tissue transplant means the ability to see again or the freedom from pain. Giving of yourself
through organ donation means that you can help a host of other people who may now be able to live
a fuller life because of your generosity.
2. Define intellectual revolutions. Discuss how intellectual revolutions transform societies. (10)
The term "Intellectual Revolution" is used to refer to Greek speculation about the "nature" in the
period before Socrates (roughly 600 to 400 BCE). Hence, the alternative, technical terms are "pre
Socratic" or "non-theological" or "first philosophy". Bear in mind that the "philosophy" in question has
little to do with ethics, and much more to do with what we would call physics or logic. Good
communication is vital if the intellectual is to succeed in effectively and convincingly conveying his or
her vision for a better society. Building on universal and timeless values, intellectuals also apply their
knowledge to shape, and protect, social standards and values. Intellectual revolution is the period
where paradigm shifts occurred. It is where the scientific beliefs that have been widely embraced and
accepted by the people where challenged and opposed. Intellectual revolution transforms societies by
shaping the society by the means of the ideas. Societies are constantly moving towards change in
ideas, customs and concepts. This movement lies on the shoulders of intellectuals who transmit the
momentum in the engine of action to produce a renewed intellectual movement whose goal is to
develop society and raise human value at all levels and in all aspects of life. Intellectual revolution will
transform societies through critical-thinking, evaluation, and creating appropriate rules for equal
opportunity. It is a continuous process of development to achieve the needs of society. The
collaborations of great minds make the world peaceful and progressive. The ability and willingness to
awaken society for a noble cause and the lack of any one of these elements is not consistent with the
definition of an intellectual thus from this point of view, the intellectuals’ role is about social
responsibility.
3. Considering the current state of our society, do you think science literacy among people has
contributed to the growth of the economy? Explain your answer. (10)
The Economy is also part of Mankind’s history. Economy is indeed important for society, and indeed
Science should appreciate it. Science should also show its economical aspect, and as such there
should be ways to measure both its cost to society and the economic benefits derived from the
scientific activity.
