Descriptive Title: Philippine Folk, Ethnic and Foreign Dances


Course Description: This course provides the students the idea, insight and understanding about the different
Folk and Ethnic dances in the Philippine. This course aims to make students learned the different Foreign
dances.
Course Objectives: At the end of the semester the students must have:
• • Explained the nature/background of the different folk dance.
• • Recognized the different folk and ethnic dances in the Philippines.
• • Described the skills involved in folk and ethnic dance.
• • Identified the different foreign dances.
• • Executed the steps of the different folk, ethnic and foreign dances.

TITLE: PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCE
DISCUSSION:
A• A. What is a Folk Dance?

FOLKDANCE is considered as part of the tradition or culture of a group of people. Some folk dances originated
from ancient rites such as celebrations for bountiful harvests and fertility. Folk dances in the Philippines are
the visualization of the grace and beauty of the country lasses goinf through the intricacies of a courtship
dance with their barrio swains. It is wearing the merry laughter of simple barrio folks dancing happily, lost to
guitar strumming and finger snapping or clapping of hands timed with the music.
The Filipinos in natureare basically music lovers, endowed with talent for dancing. Folk dancing is an effective
tool for entertainment as well as a vehicle for the preservation of the Filipino culture. It is a creative
expression of our culture.
A• B. What are the different Folk dances in the Philippines?

There are folk dances in several regions in the Philippines which depict beautiful customs and traditions of the
people. Among these are:
1. ALAY – a dance in the Tagalog region performed as an offering to a special guest or honoree as a welcome
gesture.
2. ESCOTIS – a Visayan folk dance performed in any social gathering of the people inhabiting the mountains of
Capiz and towns of Panay.
3. Palakis – courtship dance from Bontoc performed at wedding celebrations and during festivals like canao
and begnas.
4. PANGALAY – a popular dance in Sulu and performed in wedding celebration and at big social affairs.

5. NATIONAL RICE FESTIVAL – depicts the different steps in rice growing as practiced in the different regions in
the Philippines. Different regions may differ in their ways of doing the work but they have a common
traditional way of planting, harvesting, threshing,airing,pounding and winnowing.
Task I
Instructions: Name some Philippine Folk Dances and name them according to regions.
Define each dances. ( From Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao ).

footwear, headwear, and equipment that used in folk dancing are the following:

2. Why do you say that dancing is an art?


• Dancing is an art because you as a dancer you are performing it in a creative way.
• With dance, you are able to tell a story without using your mouth.
• Dances exhibited emotion, portray characters and tell stories.
• Through your choreography and facial expressions you are able to completely change yourself
into another character.
• In addition, dancing can be able us to express our emotions and feelings.
• The criteria of judging a dance contest in folk dance are the following:

4. What is the difference between a cultural dancer and a modern dancer? • The difference between
cultural dancer and a modern dancer is that a cultural dancer performing the traditions and norms in every
culture, while a modern dancer usually performing in theatre using special technique for developing the use of
the entire body movements expressive of abstract ideas. They dance relating to the present or recent times.
