machine.
5. A contractor has to supply 10,000 bearings per day to an automobile manufacturer. He finds that, he can
produce 25,000 bearings per day. The cost of holding a bearing in stock for one year is 20 paise, and set-

12. a) The demand for a certain item is 18,000 units per year. The holding cost per unit is Rs.1.2 per unit, [9]
and the cost of one procurement is Rs.400. No shortages are allowed. Determine:
(a) Optimum order quantity,
(b) Number of orders per year and
(c) Time between orders.

b) A stationary wholesaler is to order daily sheet desk calendars for the coming year. Suppose ordering is [6]
only in multiples of 100. No reordering is possible. Leftover units are worthless. The calendars sell for
Rs.3 each and the purchase cost to the wholesaler is Rs.2.50. On the basis of his past experience, the
dealer estimates the probability of different demand levels as follows:
1000 0.10
2000 0.15
3000 0.50
4000 0.25
14. An electrical distribution establishment is fitted with1000 fuses of a certain standard. Over the entire
lifetime of say five years the rates of failure in percentage over its life span is given hereunder. The
company has two options of replacing the fuses. It costs Rs.5 per fuse it replaces individually after its
failure. On the other hand if it replaces all the 1000 fuses at a time it costs Rs.2.50 per fuse. Suggest an
