Superintendent of Public Instruction Term: 4 Years Chris Reykdal Nonpartisan

The Superintendent of Public Instruction is the chief executive officer of the State Board of
Education. It is the only state executive office elected as a nonpartisan position. In
Washington, the OSPI is the primary agency that oversees public K-12 education. It is their
job to manage resources and tools for schools so that all students receive a proper
education. Some of the regular duties of the office include approval and accreditation of
programs, appointment of state and local funds, and certification of teaching personnel.

What are your thoughts and plans on the Sex ed bill?

“K-3 will include social and emotional learning where they will teach kids “do you have a safe an adult” and make
sure they understand the precursor of bullying. Keeping hands to self and controlling emotions are building blocks to
for safer behavior down the road. Despite what you may have heard, this bill will not include sexual education for K-3
students. Parents can choose to have their children opt out. Overall, we want to avoid assault, abuse, unintentional
pregnancy and STD’s.”

What are somethings we can look forward to if you’re elected?

“Some things to look forward to as me, Chris Reykdal as Superintendent of Public Instruction is redesigned literacy in
grade school; CTE in middle schools; increased mental health support for students; more transitional journey through
junior and senior year that assists everyone and their individual paths; better family and parent involvement. He wants
the best for his kids and other’s kids as well.”

Since most schools are doing online because of COVID-19 what are your plans for getting students and facility
back on campus?
“When it comes to when students are allowed back or what it will look like is something that is decided by local school
district and the governor because the OSPI has no power when it comes to these decisions. When a school decides to
open up again there will be frequent cleaning of hands and surfaces every day, face coverings and six-foot social
distancing.”

With everything going on with the Black Lives Matter movement what actions are you going to take to ensure
the safety and comfort of students and teachers of color in Washington?
“I think we need to diversify our educators and open up conversation and sharing of different cultures in order so that
students that come from different backgrounds can feel like school is a safe and open space for them. In order to di tis
we must be intentional about race and not say it’s one of many things. We have to realize that there is a racial injustice
in this country and this country was founded on Africans Americans in particular ,women and men who didn’t own
property exclusion when it came to being able to participate in democracy. So, you’ve got to intentionally work on
these practices.”
