ACCY 205 – Economic Development

PART I.
Identify the population of each country.
• Population of China
For several decades, China has been the most populous country all over the world and
this is because of the belief of their former President that the more the population a country
have, the more powerful it is. As years went by, their population increased yearly for many years
not until they imposed this 1-child policy. Because of this, their population was minimized and
almost half a million decreased every year because of this policy. This has been their way of
increasing the growth of its country up until today. Despite their success, some of the Chinese
experienced imbalance and inequality. It has bow approximately 1.3 billion people.
• Population of India
India was also one of the countries with a huge number of population and just like China,
they also imposed a policy or program to slowly decrease its population with the main purpose
of developing their economy. India is the first country to develop a family planning program but it
wasn’t successful on its early stage. Later on, after several years, most Indians are already
practicing this family planning program in order to help their country decrease their population
and to improve their economy. Because of this, they have the same effect with China and they
were able to boost the economy of India. Almost the same number with China, India now has
1.3 billion population.

Status of their Poverty

Both China and India are successful in controlling its population and are also one of the
countries who are on top of the list of rich countries around the world. Their poverty rates remain
low in the past years. This is because everything they have is almost sufficient for everyone
including their food supply, shelter, education and other needs. Most people are also literate
because almost all Chinese and Indians are capable of sending themselves to universities. With
this, they also have small rate of unemployed citizens because they also provide many
opportunities to its people.

Developments in China and India

China and India now have increasing rate in terms of education which means that only a
few of its people are illiterate. As an effect of 1-child policy and family planning they also have
more men than women which resulted to more family savings. As for the Chinese, these
savings are intended to attract single women to marry their sons since the ratio of men to
women is far from being balance. Because they were successful in controlling their population,
there have been a great improvement on the children’s health since the government will be able
to focus on lesser number of children compared to many if they do not have this program on
family planning. There is also greater opportunities for women, unlike before wherein they only
focused on the sides of the men. Both countries are not just impressive in terms of its economy
but it also greatly improved and promoted gender equality.
Poverty, Population, and Development in China and India: Reaction Paper
There are several factors contributing to both poverty and development of a certain
country and one of these is population. Even the rich countries are also struggling on how to
properly balance their population like China and India as stated in the reading material. This is
also one of the problems that Philippines is facing today -- its population.

"The more the merrier." This is what many people say when we talk about population but I
was also wondering if this quote is applicable when it comes to developing the economy. I read
about what the former President of China said about population, that a large population would
mean a more powerful country. With this statement, I partly agree because it's really true that
the citizens are the primary key which contributes to the development of the country. This is
because it is the people who are executing the everything into process whether we talk about
the production of goods and products, trading, construction, and such. If there will be no people
or if there will be less people living in a certain place, then all the opportunities and works
available will not be grabbed and utilized. If this happens, the country will be generating small
amount of revenues since there is only limited number of people working. That is why, man
power is indeed very much needed.

On the other hand, I partly disagree as well on having large number of population as it
may also hinder the growth and development of the country might affect the people themselves.
If therr will be overpopulation, there will be scarcity of supplies of the basic needs. Because of
the over increase in population, the land for shelter will not be enough for everyone because as
we have observed now, it's not just houses that arr being built. There are many buildings and
infrastructure occupying our lands which means that some people will be homeless or will not
be able to have proper and decent houses just like what we are witnessing right now wherein
some of our fellow Filipinos are living in the so called "barong-barong" or places under railways
which are really dangerous. Aside from that, there will also be people who might/will die
because of famine. The higher the population, the higher will be the rate of competition in food
supply. Philippine population is constantly increasing but the nature, which is our source of food
and everything, has been slowly devastated making other people to suffer from hunger and
eventually starve themselves.

Those mentioned in the previous paragraph are just some of the disadvantages of having
huge population. It may also result to more chaos, increase number of illiterate people, unequal
support from the government, etc. To lessen the problem of population, the government is doing
their best to provide programs and impose policies which they think would help the situation of
its people. Some countries imposed 1-child policy such as China to slow down the increasing
rate of their population knowing that they have been the most populous country for several
decades. Here in the Philippines, we also have this birth control and family planning program
during the administration of former President Noynoy Aquino because of the noticeable increase
in population every year. Those programs were int4oduced not to impose 1-child policy but to
only limit the number of children in every family. Those are really good programs but it weren't
followed and applied by many of us because of many hindrances and one of those is the
Catholic Church. That is why up until now, the mortality rate is continuously rising.

Personally, I am not in favor of under population nor overpopulation. I just want everything
to keep in balance or at least close to being balanced anf I bet that should be one of what we
should focus now -- to balance everything. If we make things in balance step-by-step, then we
will be able to grow and develop our selves and the situation of our country. I believe more in
the saying that everything that's not in moderation might harm you.
