Gec 5: Explanation Essay

Overpopulation
Introduction
The Philippines is battling different challenges in our society such as poverty,
unemployment, environmental degradation and the likes. One of the well- known
problems of almost all nation of the world is overpopulation. According to the estimated
statistics of United Nations as of February 19, 2022, there are about 112,560,388
people in the Philippines. This makes the island rank as top 13th in the most populous
country in the world today and it comprises 1.41% of the world population. The Filipino
population is also one of the fastest growing on the earth throughout the history.
Furthermore, the status of population growth is very alarming as it's one of the
greatest hindrances in combating poverty to improve the living standards of the people
which reflect to our economy. Overpopulation makes a country experienced difficulties
in providing the necessities of its constituents. It also the main driving force of issues in
the environment.

Body
Generally speaking, we prescribed population as the total number of all the
people or inhabitants living in a specific area, region, or country. Population is significant
for estimating the size and composition of the number of beings in that area such as the
age, sex and other factors. For example, if we know the number of people in that city,
we can immediately assess which of them must be prioritized or how much resources
must be given. In this essay, we will talk about the population or how many people
residing in our country, which is the Philippines. As I have said earlier, the total
population of our country is 112,560,388 with a total land area of 115,831 square miles.
We can say that in every square mile, there is 939 people living in that area. Our
country was included in the most- fastest urbanization countries in the world. Making the
City of Manila remains as the "most densely populated city" on earth with around
111,000 people every square mile. The 47 percent of the total population of our country
is found in urban areas. Compare to the 31 percent of Thailand and 16 percent of
Cambodia. This will continue to grow because people who live in rural areas experience
poverty which results to migration in cities.
Overpopulation is an undesirable situation wherein the human population
exceeds the actual carrying capacity of the regenerated resources of the Earth. In this
kind of situation, because of great number of people, some might experience shortage
of basic necessities such as food, shelter, water, and etc. The factors that affect
overpopulation are birthrate (number of individuals born per 1,000 of the population per
year), death rate (number of individuals die per 1,000 of the population per year), and
migration (moving of people in and out of that place). Based on the estimated statistics
of United Nations, there is about 2,554 babies are born every day compare this to 713
people die every day. This indicates that number of births here in our country exceeds
the number of deaths. However, there's also an average of 6,000 Filipinos leaving the
Philippines every single day which is much bigger than the number of people who move
into our country.
Some of the main reasons of overpopulation here in our country are poverty,
decline in mortality rate, poor contraception and etc. The first one is falling mortality rate.
If the number of children born each year equals the number of adults that die, then the
population will be stabilize. But according to the data aforementioned, in our country that
is not the case. And while there are many factors that can increase the death rate for
short period of time, the ones that increase the birth rate do so over a long period of
time. Second is poverty. According to some, this is the main cause or the second cause
of rapid population growth in our country, because most Filipinos are unemployed, they
tend to just stay in their houses and have nothing to do. A very small part of population
had enough money to live comfortably. The rest faced poverty and gave birth to large
families. The last one is underutilized contraception. Based on statistics, there's an
average of 5 children per woman. Even though, our government introduced and
encouraged the use of contraceptive, but due to lack of money to buy this kind of stuff,
this is considered as underutilized. Another is, in our country, most of the Filipinos are
religious people that their religion discourages this kind of birth control.
This rapid population growth makes a country overpopulated that may result to
inadequate economic supplies such as water, food, and other basic needs. Fast-
growing population is not really good to our country considering our economic capacity.
Almost everyone knows that our country cannot support every Filipino needs. It also
affects the city because of immigrants who wants to work in the cities for better wages.
This rapid population growth not only affected the living humans, but also the animals as
demand for land arises, there will be destruction of natural habitats such as
deforestation. When our country filled with human beings, many animals will go extinct
and poverty issue will never be solved. It also created conflicts such as crime and
violence as the population grows that will result to competing each other because of
employment opportunities and public services. The gap between the rich and poor will
continue to grow.

Conclusion
As I end this, this essay will awake the minds of Filipinos to do their roles
especially us the youth because we are more prone to pregnancy nowadays to be
aware of the effects of unplanned pregnancy. As for our government, I encourage them
to make the contraceptive accessible or make it free as much as possible for everyone
in order to decline the rate of population growth.
