Terumah - Contribution
Throughout the Torah, patterns are a fundamental part of the way the Father chooses to
communicate. Phrases, key words, and similar events all are repeated in order to tie events
together and weave together the tapestry that is the Scriptures. One of the most obvious
examples of this is found within this week’s parshah Terumah/”Contribution” where we
read of the “pattern” of the Tabernacle and that it is indeed based upon what is already
seen! The parshah this week is taken from Exodus 25:1-27:19 and it details the
conversation Moses has with YHVH upon Mt. Sinai. Within this section we read of all the
details concerning how the Tabernacle will be built, including the materials needed,
instructions for the Ark, Table of Shewbread, Menorah, the actual structure, and all the
different entrances.
Exodus 25:2
Offering: Strong’s #8641 teruwmah תרומהcontribution, offering, an oblation; from #7311
ruwm רוםto rise, be high, lofty, exalted
*Cognate of #8643 teruw’ah תרועהalarm, signal, blast or shout of war or alarm or
joy; from #7321 ruwa’ 1 )רועto shout, raise a sound, cry out, give a blast 2)
destroyed; contains the 2 letter root רוrev (#7299) appearance, form.
Here we are given our first hint at what is really about to take place! These offerings are
going to be used to make the form or the appearance of something or someone! Notice that
the term teruwmah has the letter mem מand teruw’ah עayin. Both the mem and the ayin
can represent a womb! The mayim represents the actual area of the womb, and the ayin
the womb of your mind (it is the eye, the entrance to this womb). The sole purpose of the
womb is to house seed and allow it to grow to produce offspring! Something is about to be
birthed in other words!
Exodus 25:8-9
Dwell: Strong’s #7931 shakan שכןto settle down, abide, dwell, tabernacle, reside
The first reference of this is Genesis 3:24 – “So he drove out the man; and he placed
(shakan) at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned
every way, to keep the way of the Tree of Life.”
Among: Strong’s #8432 tavek תוךmidst, middle; important term regarding the Garden of
Eden as well! Where the Tree of Life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were
located, also where Adam and Eve hid themselves from YHVH!
*The building of the Tabernacle is a repeat, based on the pattern, of what was birthed at
Teruah (Feast of Trumpets) – Creation of Adam! The Tabernacle and the Temple were both
built in the form of a man laid out on the earth! Adam was compromised and denied access
to the Tree of Life, yet by building this Tabernacle it in effect restores that access!
We see this pattern being based upon Adam being laid out upon the earth.
Genesis 2:7 – “And YHVH Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Breathed: Strong’s #5301 naphach נפחto breathe, blow, sniff at
*Gematria = 138 the same as #3947 laqach לקחto take, get, fetch, acquire, marry,
take as a wife
Breath: Strong’s #5397 neshamah נשמהbreath, spirit; from #5395 nasham נשםto pant,
describes the deep breathing and gasping of a woman in labor
Once again we see this pattern! One is taken in marriage, a wedding covenant is agreed
upon (Mt. Sinai and “breathed”) and then a birthing process begins (the building of the
Tabernacle man and the term “breath).
Notice that He breathed into the nostrils. This ties into the building of the Tabernacle! The
first piece of furniture described is the Ark of the Covenant. Exodus 25:10 – 12
Viewing the Tabernacle/Temple as the form of a man, the Ark corresponds to the nose! If
this pattern is really going to play out, can we see the breath being breathed into this nose
(the Ark)?
Numbers 10:35-36
Notice the 2 Nun’s that encase this phrase proclaimed over the Ark as it moves!
= נseed, life, and it was the breath of “lives” that was breathed into Adam, you see the same
picture here concerning the ark (nostrils) the life is literally breathed into the Ark of the
Covenant!
It was the bones of Joseph that were placed within this ark, bones: Strong’s #6106 ‘etsem
עצםbone, essence, substance. It’s a cognate of the term trees: Strong’s #6086 ‘ets עץtree,
wood, timber where Adam and Eve hid themselves upon being compromised!! It’s the
same pattern again and again – the bones of Joseph (dead and without life) is the same
picture of Adam and Eve among the trees, who as well had become dead (cut off from the
Tree of Life), both are in need of the Ark where the breath of life is breathed into them once
again!
Ezekiel 37:1-5
Down: Strong’s #5117 nuwach נוחto rest, settle down, sit down
*It’s the same term used in Numbers concerning the Ark resting (the phrase within the 2
letter nun’s)
Midst: Strong’s #8432 tavek תוךmidst, middle; where Adam and Eve hid (amongst the
trees) and where YHVH would now dwell by way of the Tabernacle
This is a prophecy concerning events that we are seeing in our days being fulfilled! These
bones are dead and without life, in effect compromised just like Adam and Eve. But the
breath of life is blown into them again by way of the Ark resting again in the midst of these
bones and the bones being prepared to assemble and be betrothed again! Within the Ark of
the Covenant was placed the Ketubah – the stone tablets this is why now the restoration
of the Torah is taking place among the believing community, it is the dry bones beginning
to receive the breath of life within them again!
*Ezekiel 37:9 The term “breathe” is #5301 naphach נפחsame word used in Genesis
concerning YHVH breathing into Adam!
Remember the need for this Ark arose when we became cut off from the Tree of Life.
Within the name of this portion we see this tied together!
Teruwmah תרומה when the Vav וis used as a vowel (the vowel “u” here) it can be
dropped. By dropping this vav we come to the term tormah (#8649) תרמהtreachery,
fraud, deceit, deceitfulness; from #7411 ramah רמהto beguile, to deceive, mislead, to deal
treacherously
They were to bring these teruwmah “willingly”. Willingly: Strong’s #5068 nadab נדבto
incite, impel, make willing, to show oneself willing, to offer oneself freely
*This is the root of the name Nadab (#5070) generous, spontaneous, liberal – the son of
Aaron who offered strange fire and was killed.
Within the Hebrew we see the significance of this Ark granting us access back! We were
first cut off when we became deceived and mislead (beguiled) by the serpent in the Garden
of Eden. By Eve (the Bride) offering herself freely/showing herself willing we in effect
become the valley of dry bones!
*In Numbers 3:4 concerning Nadab and Abihu, we are told they “had no children”.
Children: Strong’s #1121 ben בןson, children; from #1129 banah בנהto build, rebuild,
establish, cause to continue
This is also the root of the word “pattern” concerning the Tabernacle. Pattern:
Strong’s #8403 tabniyth תבניתpattern, plan, form, construction, figure; from banah
Remember these same actions caused Adam & Eve to be cut off from the Tree of Life, in
effect they were cut off from the figure/form of the man (Messiah) who that Tree
represented until atonement was made. Nadab chooses to partake in this same manner of
sin and is once again cut off from the form of the Man!
The ark that grants us access back was made of shittim wood. Shittim: Strong’s #7848
shittah שטהacacia tree, acacia wood; from #7850 shotet שטטscourge, from an unused
root meaning to pierce
*Shittim is spelled the same as #7847 satah שטהto turn aside, go aside, decline, it
means to turn aside from expected behavior or faithfulness, resulting in a woman’s
defilement (Numbers 5)!
In other words, the ark points towards the one who would be pierced (Messiah –
remember this Tabernacle is a man laid out upon the earth) in order to transform the
unfaithful harlot who offered herself freely to other husbands into a worthy Bride fit to
build the House with! This would be the atonement needed for them to gain access back to
this figure (Messiah)!
Word Picture of Shittim: = שto destroy = טsnake = הthe breath This was made in order
to destroy the serpent’s breath that had entered into the Adam within the Garden and once
again place within him the breath of life, the breath of YHVH!!
We see the fulfillment of this in John 20:22 (after Yahshua has been “pierced” and
resurrected) – “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them,
receive ye the Ruach HaKodesh”.
Breathed: Strong’s #1720 (Greek) emphysao ἐμφυσάω to blow or breathe upon
The Greek word used here is employed nowhere else in the New Testament, but it
is the very one used by the Septuagint translators of Gen. 2:7 when YHVH breathed
into the nostrils of Adam!
Creating Adam
Genesis 1:27 – “So YHVH created man in his own image, in the image of YHVH created he
him; male and female created he them”.
Male: Strong’s #2145 zakar זכרmale; from #2142 זכרto remember, recall, call to mind
*In Exodus 12:5 it is used to refer to the Passover lamb
Female: Strong’s #5347 neqebah נקבהfemale; from #5344 naqab 1 )נקבto pierce,
perforate, bore, appoint 2) to curse, blaspheme
*Contains the 3 letter root qobah (#6897) קבהstomach, belly
The creation of the male and the female points towards/appoints the need for the Passover
lamb to be slain (pierced) because the bride will cause a curse upon her belly/stomach
(bitter waters of Numbers 5), hence the reason Adam is laid out upon the earth in a shadow
picture of the Messiah!
Remember terumah is a cognate term of teruw’ah (an alarm, signal, blast) from the root
ruwa’. This also is the term from which we get the name of the Feast of Trumpets/Yom
Teruah, which is when Adam was created. This becomes extremely important when we
look at Numbers 10:9.
Numbers 10:9 – “Then ye shall blow an alarm (ruwa’) with the trumpets, and ye shall be
remembered before YHVH your Elohim”
Remembered: Strong’s #2142 zakar זכרto remember, to call to mind; the root of the word
for “male”.
In other words when Adam was created at Teruah and the blast was sounded it caused
YHVH to recall something or to remember it! Remember what? The Passover lamb slain
from the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8)!
The gematria of the name of this parshah sums up the entire purpose for the building of the
Tabernacle. Terumah = 651, this is the same value as the name Ithamar (the youngest son
of Aaron – remember Nadab has already came up as well).
Ithamar: Strong’s #385 ‘Iythamar איתמרcoast of palms
From #183 ‘avah אוהdesire, incline, wait longingly, wish, sigh, want & from
#8558 tamar תמרpalm tree, date palm; from an unused root meaning to be erect or
upright
In this we see that it is all about the transformation from the characteristics of Nadab (the
one who would give themselves willingly to another) into Ithamar – those who long and
desire to be upright before YHVH!
