TENDON PROFILES

For members with variable eccentricity, elsewhere along the span, the eccentricity of the tendon must be reduced if
the concrete stress limits for the unloaded stage are not exceeded.

Lower Limit:

Considering first the unloaded stage, we find the tensile stress at the top of the beam not exceed fti

𝑃𝑖 𝑃𝑖(𝑒𝑥 ) 𝑀𝑜𝑥
𝑓𝑡𝑖 ≤ − + −
𝐴𝑐 𝑆𝑡 𝑆𝑡

Solving for the maximum eccentricity, we obtain

𝑓𝑡𝑖(𝑆𝑡) 𝑆𝑡 𝑀𝑜𝑥
𝑒𝑥 ≤ + +
𝑃𝑖 𝐴𝑐 𝑃𝑖

At the bottom of the unloaded beam, the stress must not exceed the limiting initial compression

𝑃𝑖 𝑃𝑖(𝑒𝑥 ) 𝑀𝑜𝑥
𝑓𝑐𝑖 ≤ − − +
𝐴𝑐 𝑆𝑏 𝑆𝑏

Hence, the second lower limit for the steel centroid is

𝑓𝑐𝑖(𝑆𝑏) 𝑆𝑏 𝑀𝑜𝑥
𝑒𝑥 ≤ − − +
𝑃𝑖 𝐴𝑐 𝑃𝑖

 Note: Adopt the smaller value of ex

Upper Limit:

Now, considering the member in fully loaded stage, the upper limit values for the eccentricity may be found

𝑃𝑒 𝑃𝑒(𝑒𝑥 ) 𝑀𝑡𝑥
𝑓𝑐𝑠 ≥ − + −
𝐴𝑐 𝑆𝑡 𝑆𝑡

From which,

𝑓𝑐𝑠(𝑆𝑡) 𝑆𝑡 𝑀𝑡𝑥
𝑒𝑥 ≥ + +
𝑃𝑒 𝐴𝑐 𝑃𝑒

At the bottom of the unloaded beam, the stress must not exceed the limiting initial compression

𝑃𝑒 𝑃𝑒(𝑒𝑥 ) 𝑀𝑡𝑥
𝑓𝑡𝑠 ≥ − − +
𝐴𝑐 𝑆𝑏 𝑆𝑏

Hence, the second lower limit for the steel centroid is

𝑓𝑡𝑠(𝑆𝑏) 𝑆𝑏 𝑀𝑡𝑥
𝑒𝑥 ≥ − − +
𝑃𝑒 𝐴𝑐 𝑃𝑒

 Note: Adopt the larger value of ex
