3. Informative Writing: Focus Trait: Elaboration
Writers can make their writing more interesting and give more information by
using sense words, or adjectives
• Adjectives tell how something looks, feels, sounds, smells, or tastes.
• Discuss examples of descriptive adjectives used by the author of How
Animals Communicate.
Instead of this…..An animal can have a smell
…....the author wrote this: An animal can have a bad smell.
What makes the author’s sentence better? The author used the word bad to
make the writing more clear.

Display Projectable 7.4 . Discuss the picture with children and read aloud the
words in the box.

4
Ask: What kind of words are these?  These words are adjectives. They can
describe what something is like.

Read the first sentence and ask: Which word in the box can tell more about the
puppy?  Excited can tell more about the puppy.
Add the word and read the sentence with children.
Repeat this discussion with the remaining sentences.

• Model how to choose a word from the box to complete the first sentence
