3. Grammar: Introduce Commands

Say and write: Close your book.

Ask: Is this sentence asking a question?  No
Is this sentence giving an order?  Yes
Does it start with a capital letter and end with a period?  Yes

Then Close your book is a command, not a question.

Tell children to listen carefully and do what you tell them to do.
Examples:
Sit up straight.
Put your hands on your desk.
Raise your left hand.
Put your hand down

• Write these commands on the board. Point out that each one starts with a capital
letter and ends with a period.
• Explain that you have just given children commands. A sentence that tells
someone to do something is called a command.

Ask partners to work together to write a command. Have them ask each other
questions like the ones you asked the group to confirm that the sentences they
wrote are commands. Then have children read their commands to the class.
