PROJECT PROPOSAL ON CHILD NUTRITION FOR SUSTAINABLE HEALTH AND

PRENATAL CLINIC

I. PROJECT BACKGROUND/ RATIONALE

Meeting the nutrition requirements of pregnant mothers and children under 5 has
become a major global challenge. Nearly half of all deaths in children under 5 are
attributable to under nutrition. This translates into the unnecessary loss of about 3
million young lives a year. (UNICEF data 2014)

Poor nutrition in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life can also lead to stunted
growth, which is irreversible and associated with impaired cognitive ability and reduced
school and work performance. The habit of selling off nutritious foods instead of
consuming it at home therefore puts people especially infants at risk of malnutrition and
its effects.

Mothers and other care takers have not been sensitized on the values of food
that they have in their home stead. They seem not to know which foods are the glow,
the go and the grow foods; they simply feed the children so that they are not hungry, not
with the purpose of attaining a balanced diet. Mothers therefore need to be educated
about complementary feeding, this is where the child is breast feeding but along with
breast milk and other solid foods are given.

For the pregnant women, the maternal care program in the Philippines
recommends that every pregnant woman have at least 3 prenatal care visits during her
pregnancy, 1 visit in each of the three trimesters. For early detection of risks, mothers
are advised to have a prenatal checkup as early as the first trimester of pregnancy.

High quality prenatal care includes identifying a high-risk condition among

pregnant women and educating them about potential symptoms that are indicative of
serious conditions so that early intervention can be instituted. For live births that
occurred in the five years before the survey for which mothers received a prenatal
checkup, only 33 percent were informed about the dangers related to pregnancy.
Younger mothers, those residing in rural areas, those coming from ARMM and those
with no education or with low education are less likely to be told about the dangerous
symptoms of pregnancy and are therefore more at risk. Mothers who were more likely to
be informed about such dangerous symptoms as vaginal bleeding, headache, dizziness
and edema were mothers who were residing in urban areas and who have college
education.

1
The findings indicate that for the majority of the births in the five years prior to the
survey, mothers complied with the recommended minimum number of visits. For 77
percent of births, mothers made 3 or more prenatal visits. For almost half of births, the
first prenatal visit was made in the first 3 months of gestation. It should be noted that
mothers of one in three births had their first prenatal care in the 4-7th month, while a
small percentage was first examined during the last three months of pregnancy.

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, nutrition is one of the most important contributors to human health.

In addition to managing weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, a healthy diet can help
prevent and manage of a number of noncommunicable diseases.
Improved nutrition during pregnancy, lactation, and early childhood are important ways
to avoid micronutrient deficiencies, for both mothers and children. Good maternal
nutrition during pregnancy improves the birth outcomes of children and reduces the risk
of pregnancy-related health complications. Being aware of this, we are able to

5
implement a project that would enhance child nutrition and maternal health through
offering our services. This would not only improve and benefit the quality of lives of the
people in the community but would also enable us to assess the level of awareness
gained about the importance of balanced diet to children under 5. This will also help us
identify the concerns and the knowledge gaps among the people and provide effective
measures to address them. In turn, giving our full assurance to pregnant woman that
both she and her baby’s health is well taken care of.
