CHEM 7420: Assignment 1: !! Note: You Will Not Get Full Marks If You Don't Write Down Your Reasoning!!

This document contains an assignment for a chemistry course. It has 3 questions that involve matching compounds to FTIR spectra, identifying peaks and formulas from mass spectrometry data of an unknown compound, and suggesting ionization methods for given compounds along with predicting peaks and isotope patterns. Students are instructed to explain their reasoning for all answers. The assignment is due on September 20, 2019.

CHEM 7420: Assignment 1

!! Note: you will not get full marks if you don’t write down your reasoning!!

Q1. Match the following 5 compounds to the FTIR spectra given on page 2-3. EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER.

Q2. On page 4 is the low resolution EI spectrum and FTIR spectrum of an unknown compound. High resolution mass
spec yielded m/z = 102.1045.

i) Identify the molecular ion peak.

ii) Find the molecular formula.
iii) Calculate the hydrogen deficiency index.
iv) Identify and rationalize the two largest fragment peaks (59 and 73).
v) The data belongs to one of the compounds shown below. Identify which one and EXPLAIN YOUR REASONING.

Q3. Suggest an appropriate ionization method for each of the following compounds (more than one technique is
possible) and EXPLAIN YOUR REASONING. Predict the unfragmented ion peaks (e.g. [M+H]+, [M+Na]+, [M+C2H5]+,…)
and isotope pattern (height of M+1, M+2,… peak with calculations).
